We used to see them from time to time in the Detroit area, basicly a Pontiac version of the Geo metro, they also sold them in Mexico as the G2.
I kinda like it in a weird way

Metro, that's it. It is the Canadian Pontiac version of the Geo Metro. I couldn't remember what the US version was. I remember the Canadian Pontiac version of the Chevy Corsica was the Tempest.

It was also known as the Chevy Sprint here.

I was going to say Chevrolet Sprint;
IIRC the Geo version was sold at Saturn-Saab-Isusu-Geo dealers; Where as every Chev dealer sold Sprints; And the Firefly was a Canadian market thing. There are actually a good number of unique to Canadian market Pontiacs... most of which is not worth talking about... because they were rebadges, or something of the like... kind of like 2010 model year Pontiac's.

The Sprint (Suzuki), Prizm (Toyota) and Tracker (Suzuki) all came about after GM dropped the Geo nameplate. The Geo Storm (Isuzu) never got a bowtie and was dropped. Til this day GM still cannot build a good small car or a 4 cylinder. The Iron Duke was their best shot. Hell, even one of their hottest sellers, the Pontiac Vibe, was a Toyota Matrix.

Although they has a couple early release issues I thought the Quad Four was a great engine. I had an Olds Cutlass Calais Q-4 5 speed, that car was a real sleeper.

Did you ever change a water pump on one? Or the very common head gasket? They have a very well known nickname, the "Quad-Whore". That is why you could not give away Grand Ams with the 4 cylinder.

Had to replace the timing chain idler, that was the only issue I ever had and was covered under warranty. Ran that thing hard well over 100K miles. 1988 model.

Some people got 100,000 miles out of a 301 but a few here and there doesn't make them good. Water pump jobs on Quad Whores 10 years ago were $600.00.

Weren't those called Chevy Nova in the US?

I think the Nova and LeMans were made by Daewoo? Those were dark times. Everything got a GM badge. Here we had an Asuna(?) Sunrunner, two years later it was a Pontiac Sunrunner (pretty sure those were Suzuki Sidekicks). But the Chevy Sprint and Firefly were the same car.

I have always had at least one since. I for one love them. The (Cutlass Calais) Quad 442 is the one which has the best prospect to become a late model collectible, purely because of it's "442" badge, but the Pontiac Grand Am with the Quad4HO drivetrain is the much better package. Quote:
The water pump was timing chain driven, but the water pump timing chain gear was a seperate unit from the actual water pump, which could be removed rather simply from the rear of the timing housing; There was other stuff to get out of the way, but I would really suspect that the $600 job was either for the "Twin Cam", or a padded price for shops which maybe wanted more "gravy" jobs. 1987.5-1994 2.3L water pump: 1996-2002 2.4L water pump: I prefer the pre-1995 2.3L engines (1995 model year engines were still 2.3L, but were a hybrid betwwen the earlier Quad4 design, and the soon to come Twin Cam design.

They were all poor excuses for a car. Yet Chevy lives on and Pontiac gets killed off. If I say anymore this thread will get closed like the other did.

I think the sub-compact is a legitimate catagory for makers to offer;
It's unfortunate that most sub-compacts these days are seemingly build to be NFG when they hit a set mileage... On one hand, I can understand why Ford trimmed their offerings down to the trucks and Mustangs - they are strong sellers; but, in high population density areas, or for just cheap commuting, the sub-compact, or compact both have a legitimate market segment - so I don't understand why Ford walked away from those two markets... Unless something has changed, I kept hearing about aspired "corporate average fuel economy" - and frankly, I don't know how Ford will hit their marks without offering both a compact and sub-compact to offset sales of lower mpg vehicles, like the trucks and Mustangs. I think all the big three have had too many offerings between the compact and trucks ~ then when you add truck-ish crossovers to the mix, there's way too much - and that has to hurt the bottom line.
