Can anyone tell me what the correct manual transmission case numbers should be for a '69 TA?
On the transmission, it has: Tail housing number 3846429 Cover behind linkage 3884685 Number above Patent number 3885010 Also, there is a number 'P0203' on the side between the case and the rear section. Is this a partial vin number perhaps? Should there be a date code somewhere? Finally, what is the correct shifter? Thanks, Greg.

Here is what an original 1969 Factory Hurst shifter used in the Firebird & Trans Am looks like. This shifter was also used in the 68 Firebirds & the 69 Camaro. These are the only cars that this shifter was used in. It is a high demand unit, the 1970 & up "factory Hurst" shifters are NOT THE SAME!

Here is another view, note the offset built into the base assembly. This shifter was unique to the 68-9 Firebird, & the 69 Camaro. No other car used this offset base.

A final view, beware of 1970 & up Trans Am shifter(s) being listed on ebay as 69s.

Peter, thanks for the information. Is the part number that is clearly visible the number that represents this unit?
1090241C Also, any idea on rough value range for an original in used (not mint) condition? Thanks, Greg.

Greg,
I bought a nice used one last year for $275. I think that was a good deal. They come up on Ebay once a month or so. The last few have gone around $400. Bob |

Could this be another part number that is on the shifter:
90442N What does this number decode to? It resembles the 1090241C Number.

I would say that the transmission is not original. Your main case is a 1966-67, 1969 used 3925660. Your tail housing is a 1963-65, 1969 used 3857584. That side cover was used from 1966-70 w/tail housing 3857584. The coding is a pre-1967 coding system. P=Muncie, 02=February and 03=3rd.

Hi, the numbers: 1090241C & 90442N, are NOT GM part numbers. They were
stamped by Hurst on the housings while the part was being formed. My guess is that Hurst's people used the numbers to route OEM shifter orders thru Hurst's factory & on to the customer. These numbers, letter are not what I use to tell what year, make or model the shifter is original to. Once the shifters were shipped from Hurst to Pontiac, Oldsmobile or Chevrolet. These numbers are essentially meaningless. They are not part numbers, nor are they application numbers. They were not used by the automobile makers to identify shifters, after a shifter was designed the car makers each would assign their own part number to each unit. If the shifter had a separate chrome handle, that, too also would get a part number. The stamped in numbers on the housings never matched nor even came close to each assigned number as each division had their own grouping system for the drivetrain & there was already a sequience of numbers they were working with for any type of part or assembly. GM part numbers never included a letter at the end anyway. The numbers & letter were used only by Hurst & had meaning ONLY inside of the Hurst factory. Unfortunately all of the vintage paperwork Hurst had on the OEM shifters was discarded in the early 1980s when the company was sold to Cars & Concepts. I heard that the new owners, determined that the all of the OEM papers & blueprints, (probably enough papers & documents to fill a tractor trailer), would be more work to transport that the material was worth at the time.
