Default Pic showing how the BOP Viton Seal rides on Crank

I am disassembling my 400. I used the BOP Viton seal. When I pulled off the rear main cap, the BOP Viton seal stayed on the crank (not sure if that is/was a bad sign). Anyway, I thought the seal staying on showed nicely how the seal works...thought maybe a few others might like to see this..

I wonder if the halves glued at the ends is what kept it in place? Did you have any leaks back there?

Unless i am wrong , the directions say , when assemble is ready keep halfs together, and let the red silicone dry for 24 hrs , at least, So why did you take it apart??? Won,t seal this way, i had i believe .020 sticking up on one half, checking with depth mic, then i put a good drop of silicone in the corners and let it dry overnite. If its not ready for assembly why did you go thru this?? Confused.

ok, disassemble same thing, you should be ok, as long as you follow the instructions, did you use silicon down inside when you set viton seal into the cap?? Think your ok.

I've never had luck with those seals. my DCI graphite seal works like a champ though and MUCH easier to install.

I am disassembling/tearing down/ripping apart my 400...I am not sure why the BOP seal stayed on...had a little leak when engine was running...some oil pan tabs/braces solved most of the leaking...I think the seal was ok as far as leakage. My rear main cap did not have anit-rotation holes (78 W72 400), therefore did not put any silicone in the anti-rotation holes. I did dab the ends of seal halves according to http://www.bopengineering.com/seal_instructions.pdf

Pippintook,

Looks like a nice install, thanks for the pics. It confirms the the anti-rotation holes are not necessary to stop the seal from rotating, the design alone does this. And while there are a few blocks out there that are unable to use a lip seal due to geometry issues, I can say with confidence that these cases are few and far between. With no disrepect to those who posted here 99% of rear main leaks come from the install. This statement is from almost 10 years of selling, installing, and troubleshooting many thousands of rear main seals. IMHO the BOP seal is the best seal on the market for most applications.

I used one on my 400 and again when I upgraded to the 455. No problems with either one leaking.

So far, I have used a big journal and a small journal seal, neither leaked. My PAN leaked on one engine because I chose to not install the OEM braces on the back pan bolts. I bet a lot of "seal" leaks are actually related to something other than the BOP seal. I just ordered another for my current build. Thanks Wade for making a part we really needed. M/T
