Default Timming setup for pontiac 461

what direction to advance or retard timming on pontiac engines...example do you turn the distributor towards the fire wall for retarding our towards the radiator front location for retarding..

The distributor rotor turns counter clockwise, so rotating the distributor towards the front of the car (counter clockwise) will retard the ignition timing.

A counterclockwise turn will retard the timing. As to turning it to the front or rear you have to have a reference point. Use the vacuum advance canister as the reference. Turning the vacuum advance toward the firewall will retard the timing. Turning it toward the front will advance the timing.

IF you have the vacuum advance on the drivers side of the engine.
Thought I'ld add that, since they tend to get dropped in different ways.
AND drivers side is factory.

Thanx. I should have added that. Never assume some one has the body oriented to the stock position.

FWIW, my 461 likes 30 degrees of total timing (12 initial + 18 mechanical).
