Why are the rear inner wheelhousings different
As the title states, why are the left and right rear inner wheelhousings a different shape from one another, with the driver side having a squared off rear corner? What is the most reasonable theory for why GM did it this way?

I think that may be there to facilitate the filler neck on the station wagons. Then they could use the same wheelhouse for both styles. Anytime the manufacturer can eliminate a part number, they save money.

They make inner and outer wheel housings separately as well as a complete 1 piece wheel house
I thought I only needed outer wheel houses but as I got into the car and discovered more rust I needed inner ones too My advice to you is to buy the 1 piece housing for a little more money and just cut what you need The 1 piece housings fit better with less work |

As mentioned it was so the same DS unit could be used on all models.
Including the wagons, it indeed was for the filler necks used on the wagon.

Thanks for the info, guys. I figured it would be something like that. Fortunately, I don't actually need to replace the rear wheelhousings on my GTO, but I was curious nonetheless.

Makes sense. I have a '66 wagon, and the filler tube passes right through there.

Here's an official GM cutaway display, highlighting the wheelhouse detail in question.
