Default WE HAVE PAINT!!!

Boy I am glad it's Friday. This has been a looooong week, especially Tuesday and Wednesday, but I am glad to report that I got all the exterior painting done on this project! So here's some pictures.

Here's a couple of the body just before taping it off to do the roof.

One of the bottom of the trunk ready for paint. Note the paper protecting the pad that's between the under and outer metal.

Getting closer to painting the roof...

And now we have a white roof!!

I decided to paint the wheel chock too.

Bottom side of trunk painted...trunk pad-insulator not.

And now some photos of the loose sheet metal painted.

I did the roof and all the loose sheetmetal Wednesday, well actually it ran into Thursday morning as it was 12:45 AM Thursday when I sat the gun down after putting on my last coat of clear. And then I had to wait about 45 minutes to before I could move the parts to run the car back in the shop! It was just about 2:00 AM that night, err I mean morning, before I got to bed!

And here's some photos after painting the red on the body.

And here's a few before and after shots of the wheel wells after a little detail work.

And that's all for now.

A lot of work Jeff but worth it ! A buddy and I panel painted a 69 Corvair rag top last year....in his garage.
I was more of helper..Not a easy task but can be done...it was a metalic Green..
That baby gonna look good when finished.
IMO I think 60-62 center caps and trim rings are in order for 8 lugs ..I know...give ya time..
It's going to be a neat ride...
BTW: My 'Vair had 48K on ticker....original.
Post pics when done for sure..

Question

The speed nuts/clips on the fenders, in the vicinity of the headlights: why did you paint over them instead of removing them first?

Ummm...it is painted. Did you post that question before reading the whole thread by chance?

The thought did cross my mind but I didn't for a couple reasons.

First of all the this is not an all out show car.

Second, a person is going to have to look REAL hard and just in the right area when the hood is open to even have half a chance at noticing this "error".

And third, I don't have to worry about scratching the paint putting them back on.

But I did take the time to remove and detail the visible bolts that hold the fender well to the fenders.

Uh, I posted my message before I realized there were 5 pages to this thread. I now see it's Mandalay Red...........as is my face.

That is goin to be one pretty car. I'm thinking about doing my 64 in Grenadier Red. You've now got me thinking about a white painted top.

That's some excellent looking work, Jeff! My hat's off to you. And quick, too! I've been working on a buddy's '46 Dodge truck for about 8 months now, and finally getting close to done. I don't have the work area to do the whole thing at once, so we've been concentrating on it panel by panel. Someday when I retire and move back to the mainland, I'll make sure I have some room to work with.

Wow nice work...I have a quick question...

Did you go to school to learn how to do all this or is it just experience?

Thanks for the compliments guys!! Seeing it in paint definitely makes all the hours of block sanding worth it. And it will get better looking yes after cutting and buffing it.

No I didn't go to school to learn this. Just experience, and asking a lot of questions to the right people that have done this for a lot longer than I have.

Acually I went to school for auto mechanics, which is also part of what I do for a living. So I tell people that I am just a mechanic that somehow stumbled into the paint/restoration business.

LOL...good one!!! The snow never has gotten too deep for me to not make it to my shop.

But it's gotten a bit close a few times this winter.

Just thought I would give another progress update and photos.

First up are a couple photos of the roof after I cut and buffed it.

And a couple of the hood and trunk.

And a few of the fenders and quarters, included a couple of 'in the process' photos.

And one more of the back with the trunk and rear trim installed.

The goal is to have the car done by the end of next week. I have the doors and hood to install and all the sheetmetal will be on. The I need to put all the glass and interior back in, including all new weatherstriping and window channeling. Oh, and all the rest of the exterior trim and bumpers.

It's going to be a busy couple weeks, especially since we have two boys graduation this coming Sunday. But at this point I feel fairly confident on getting it done in time.

Hopefully I will feel the same way come about next week Wednesday or so.
