I got the trans installed today, as well as the shifter, except I don’t remember which shifter tan goes where on the side case:

Here’s what I mocked up based on some generic photos of a Muncie:

Does anyone have a picture, or at least an accurate length, for the clutch return spring (from clutch fork to small bracket on the frame). That spring went missing with my clutch fork. I bought a repo clutch fork from Ames and had a repo clutch spring from some other vendor, but that spring is way too long at 9.25 inches (even though it is labeled for a ‘70-‘72 on the package). I wonder if it’s for a Camaro. Here’s what it looks like:

Found an older thread from HFR and he gave the GM part no. 3899021, and that OER reproduces that. Thanks.

Does this ground wire get bolted to throttle bracket, or intake bolt?

The 428 I am going to run has a SuperDamper on it so it requires a 3-bolt crank pulley. I bought one from RamAir Restorations. Very nice billet piece. I did a trial fit with the p/s pump and it appears that the crank pulley lines up ok, but the water pump pulley and p/s are off quite a bit. It looks like it might line up better with the outer groove, but according to the assembly manual, the p/s belt goes on before alternator belt:

?

I had no alignment problems on the RA III 400 and this is the same fan and p/s pump. Is the ‘69 428 water pump shorter than the one on the ‘70 400?

does that 428 have the shorter water pump?

Because that's my guess.

that should be an easy swap... PITA, but easy.

The early ‘69 short water pump is 4” compared to the later ‘69 and up at 4-1/2”.

Easy fix plus the ‘69 water pumps being unique are sought after so recovering some funds should be fairly easy.

/\ I think the 428 is from one of his other vehicles... so he will probably want to keep it - so he doesn't have to find a replacement later on.

Yeah, I ran the 428 in my ‘67 from 2002-2013, then I sent that car down to Steve Barr for a full frame-off and put the original 400 HO back in. The 428 has just been under my bench for past few years, and I’m only putting it in because I am waiting on my 4.00” stroker crank for the Trans Am’s RA3 motor. It was supposed to be here in April. I figured I’d just run the ‘28 for the summer and will hopefully have the stroker RA3 ready to go back in over the winter.

I just ordered a water pump fromFlowKooler with the 4.5 in. snout

You guys were spot on. I took the w/p off the 428 and compared it to the w/o that was on the 400 and you can see the difference in the snout length.

The one off the 400 looks brand new, but it doesn’t have the cast impeller. Can I still use it on the 428 or should I just replace it? (I’d save the FlowKooler for the stroker 400 when that gets assembled)

I’d swap it over.
