Default Essex Rifle???

The post on the Remington got me thinking.

My grandfather gave my dad an Essex .22 single-shot rifle that he then gave to me. I am not a gun person, but treasure this piece. I have never heard of Essex. Does anyone have any history on them? Its not in great condition. Has a chunk of the stock missing. Just curious.

I think they were a lower end rifle like the ones that used to be sold by hardware stores and such. Google search turns up some info.

Thanks!

That is very possible. My grandparents lived in a small town in eastern Kentucky. I think the closest store woulda been a Western Auto.

Yeah, I have my Grandfather's bolt action shotgun from a similar deal. It was a brand sold by Sears and Roebuck called J.C Higgins.

I have a few Higgins guns as well. They didn't make them but were made by Stevens, Hi Standard, Savage, Winchester and so on and just branded as J.C. Higgins. They sold all kinds of fishing, camping, and guns back in the '50s-'60s.

I've dispatched many an Armadillo with that ol' J.C. Higgins shotgun. Needs a shell extractor though and couldn't find one back when I was looking. Every time I fire it I have to manually pull the shell out to rack the next one.
Looks like Numrich has a few to choose from now. Gotta check later and see if one of them fits. https://www.gunpartscorp.com/search#...ctor%20shotgun
