Very nice car. I bought a brand new Daytona Yellow Z28 in 1978. I don't remember seeing any axle tubes or drive shafts painted back then. The diff cover does look really shiny and normally it would have rusted due to being bare metal.

Really neat T/A, but it appears the rearend housing, swaybar, and leaf springs have been fluffed.

I agree.
There's a service bulletin in 75 or 76 were the factory quit painting the rear ends.

My 78 had natural metal driveshaft and rear end. Rear end cover same as axle tubes. The springs and sway bar brackets also were natural metal non painted or gold iridite color as those appear to be.
Bird was about a $80 dollar option I didn't like the looks and as a graduating college kid tried to keep the price down on mine. It was cheaper to have a AM radio than the "radio installation package" to put in your own casstte/AM/Fm later.

My 79 Formula's rear axle, drive shaft, and u-joints were also bare metal. Only the leaf springs were painted... black. Rear disc calipers were also black.
