Default 1967 Windshield Wiper switch

When rewiring my Firebird I ran the power wire through the wiper switch. It blew the fuse, upon inspection the "common" terminal on the switch has continuity to ground. Is the negative wore supposed to run through the switch and not the hot wire? I'm confused...or do I have a bad switch. All worked before I removed all the factory harness and am replacing with a Painless kit

Windshield wiper motors have 12v directly to the motor. The switch grounds either the low or high speed winding starting the motor into motion. Once moving the motor will continue through at least one cycle. If the switch is still on the motor continues to run. When you turn the switch off (ie. remove the ground) the motor continues to run until it reaches the park position.
