Put a Quadrajet on it!
This is not the easiest thing to do. I am not a purist. My 64 GTO was a tri power and after I got the right parts on it the car got 19 mpg. Ran great.
This is not about is a quadrajet being a good carb because I believe it is. For me their are a few things that get in the way. I am not a purist but like the overall look or originality. 1. I have a 2004r transmission and I have not found a reasonable answer to the detent cable adapter for a quadrajet. 2. finding a quadrajet that is right for your car and engine. I think I have one. I have a 7041264 for a relativel stock small valve 400. Getting the carb rebuilt. 1. finding a qualified person to rebuild it. The good rebuilders are swamped. I here a lot of nightmares of unqualified rebuilders and the carbs have to be gone through again. 2. Rebuild it your self. I have gotten a rebuild kit from Cliff R. who was very helpful. But I don't have the confidence to do it myself. And I would like to have it cleaned and color Buy a rebuilt one. Who sells good ones? I am a hobbiest and not a mechanic so the path of least resistance is to buy a one size works for all cases. So I am all about putting a quadrajet on it, but it is easier said than done. So for all the people on the forum who have helped me along the way I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks Greg Let the beating begin. |

There are several builders on this site, I cant name them all. Im sure some will chime in. I used SMI out of California. He was about 8 weeks out, and build a carb to compliment my engine build sheet. It ran very well right out of the box. The only thing I have touched is the idle speed screw and the APT a little. It was about $550 for mine with a -8 an fuel inlet. Yours would probably be cheaper.

https://quadrajetpower.com/ I think Cliff gave them a good review here, recently. Said they buy some parts from him. I also remember at least one good review from a guy on another Pontiac forum who bought from Everyday. The guy at Everyday appears to be a Buick guy. http://www.everyday-performance.com/index.htm Last edited by ponyakr; 10-04-2019 at 01:40 PM. |

Had him do a q-jet a few years ago. It was all FUBAR to say the least. I had to send it to Cliff to get sorted out. |

I have a Lonnie Diers Extreme Automatics 2004r stage 2 hooked to my 800 cfm quad rebuilt by Cliff Ruggles. All I can say is he is the best for a spot on rebuilt carb. I am currently running an SD Performance stump puller cam, cnc'd 320 cfm round port edelbrock heads and a 455 stroker set up from Len Williams. The mileage is very good but due to the right foot it still likes to hear the tires chirp when downshifting from drive to second and then hear that torque chirp the tires in drive once more. The transmission is hooked to a Bowties Overdrive cable and throttle kit set-up so don't be afraid to call them and tell them exactly what you want to do and they are more than capable to get you on track. The quad has not acted up at all in well over nine years now. You can call me if you need more info on the carb or set-up.

We've talked before....No overdrive, but close. I'm running my stock, original '67 Q-Jet in my '67 GTO with a small-valve 9.3CR 400 engine and TH400 trans. The 'overdrive' is my 2.56 rear end. Fuel mileage on the open road is excellent, for the weight of the car. 21 MPG at 75-80, one time got 23 mpg average when I cruised at 65 mph on a 140 mile trip. Good throttle response, smooth, runs cool, sips gas.

4L80 for best results... no mechanical link contraptions to carb.

I probably wouldn't have started this thread except, I have owned two Pontiacs.
1. 1964 GTO 389 bored ,060 tri power other than the bore everything else was stock. 4 speed and 3:23 rear end. At 65 mph it got 18-19 mpg.SOLD 2. Currently 1965 tempest conv. 400 bored .040 crower 60240 cam #15 heads(small valve) performer intake 735 cfm Quick fuel. Overdrive with 3:73 gears final 4th gear 2.55. at 65 mph 12 mpg. Thursday I am taking it a shop and they are going to run it on there dyno and check AFR all the way through the gears. I'm thinking put a tri power on it maybe lightning will strike twice. lol Thanks Last edited by footjoy; 10-14-2019 at 09:18 AM. |
