Default Oil change

Can anyone here give me some tips on changing the oil without making a hell of a mess? It’s on my yukon. I can get the plug out and catch that oil fine but I go to take the filter off and it just runs down the filter and gets all over my hands and clothes.

My 69 400 has a similar issue where I need to use a plastic bag to capture filter as taking it off in its spinoff is guaranteed mess!

What you need to do is maybe a two step approach.
Lose it with a wrench to where you can then use hands only after its is loose enough but Not to loose oil flows out.
Then get a plastic bag like a quart or half gallon ziplock thick enough to be durable to slip Over it and twist it off.
Let it drain and fall into the bag.
Paper towels close by for the few drips that always occur to catch them.
Work great the filter and oil traps in the thick bag.
You can probably get a small box of bags long enough at a dollar tree store somewhere..

First wear old clothes and vinyl gloves. Then get a drip pan about 2 feet by 3 feet. Put the pan under the car and clean the spilled oil on it when you are done. Or you could puncture the filter and let it drain into the drain pan.

I watched a fairly credible extensive multi-product test on oil filters.
Mobil-1 seemed to rank the highest on quality of materials it is made of and filtering ability also.
They cut a used one open and looked at their filter babbitt material that did the best job on tapping small particles, that caught my attention.
A bit expensive part yet what’s our engine worth?
And money we spend on coffer in one week?

Mobil 1 and K&N are the same filter. Only difference is the K&N has a nut welded on the bottom.

Any minute now the paid SCAMSoil fans will subject us with their worthless 2 cents.

Lord ..... how did a question about a messy oil change on a Yukon turn into filter reviews??

Default oil change

Drain the oil into a pan.
Put the drain pan under the filter.
Take a sharp screw driver and poke a hole in the bottom most part of the filter.
Let the filter drain.
Remove and replace the filter.

Good Luck, Billk

You can always build a garage with 10' under the door and 16' under the rafters. Install a lift, get a transmission jack and big oil drain pan to sit on it. Even after spending $30,000 or so on all that you'll get a little on you more times than not, but at least you can jump out of the way quickly if you incidentally drop the filter into the drain pan full of oil!.......LOL....

I always put a 8x8 tarp on the floor as well. I like the plastic bag trick described above. Good idea.

This old time mechanic had a 1' hole drilled into the floor of his old garage, he put the car up in the air on his lift put his funnel on a piece of tubing into the hold and let it drain. He has been doing this since 1950!! haha

Hopefully the oil is going into a storage tank and sucked out by a tanker truck later when it was full. That’s the way old full service gas stations did it. Back in the day the used oil would get sprayed on dirt roads to keep the dust down. Ah the good old days.

When I lived in Eastern New Mexico back in 1970-73 I would see 18 wheelers empty their crankcases right into the sand along side of the road.

I have LB manifolds on my bird and have a hard time with the plastic bag method. Especially if trying to change oil while it's still hot.
