Default Finally a little seat time in the IA/Camaro

Made some runs at a track rental at Baytown last night. About 20 cars one lane for street radials one for slicks. Finally had time to do several runs in a row. A little disappointing but I figure had a LOT of years to work the gremlins out of the 1978 Trans Am and only about 6 or 7 passes in the Camaro niow. Air was not great either 80s with humidity I think DA was 2600ft. A few glitches. I was so used to foot braking TA in burnout the brakes held the rear too much. Tried the line lock then it quite working so finally just buzzed the tires . Even with poor burnouts the track was well prepped and it stuck. I think the convertor is just too tight. It is one I got from Lynn Mcarty's Trans guy years ago fro one of the 455s he felt would still work on the 500". I know the old 5000 stall A-1 I had in the 455 would be too loose. From what I could tell on replay tach slowly goes to 4500, replay tach was not always cooperative either. Only had 1.7ish 60 fts. Also either the throttle return springs are to heavy from what I am used to or maybe the carpet makes it to where I have to really stomp the gas pedal. Took me awhile to figure that out.First run also short shifted as shift light did not set right and I only ran a 12.5@ 107!! Finally got 10.88@ 127 stomping the gas pedal like I was doing a leg press! One run between the two 11 second runs I pulled the air cleaner off to see if it was a restriction and it lean popped so bad it stalled! Same setup as when off the dyno so need to rejet I guess.

I have a data logger I tried to use I will check, see if I worked it right. It has a wide band to look at AFR for the carb. If I can figure out the program! New car new stuff but started feeling better and more familiar the more runs I got.

Also even with a 2 row Griffin aluminum radiator, fan and good shroud it stays 190-210 even pulling down the return road whereas the TA cools right down with it's 4 row radiator. So may nee a pusher fan to turn on or even add an electric water pump.

They did have the scale on and with me weighs 3595lbs.

Nice deal out there with a few cars. Cost more but could have made 20 passes at least if I had not had to work til 6. They ran 6-12. Good track prep. Radial tire lane cost more as they prepped more, but slick lane you could hear the track workers shoes sticking!
Some really nice cars and even nicer rigs ! One big bus style RV had a pop out flat screen TV on the side they were watching baseball and football between runs.

Have someone look at the carb to verify throttle opening fully when you press the pedal, cut the carpet away so there is no wondering. I run a Mark VIII fan with the same Griffin radiator and my car will only see 200 °F when it's over 90°F out and it cools back down quickly on the return road to 180°F. My converter stalls about 5000 rpm. Put a GoPro inside the car and you can monitor all the gauges.

Good to get your feet wet. If you learned anything it was a worthwhile outing.

Yep throttle opening is top on the list!

Differences from dyno-could not fit carb spacers under the small cowl hood so carb is on the Victor. Run an air cleaner when it is on the street but is a 14x4" with a L-88 deep drop. And 3.5 X into 3" mufflers and tailpipes. Also tightened the lash . On the dyno we loosened the intake to 0.035 and it just sounded like a sewing machine with all the clatter when I drove it so set it back to Comp's specs.

Going to pull up the data logger I downloaded later and see if it any usable stuff. has engine rpm, driveshaft rpm, wide band, fuel pressure oil pressure and G.

Used the Demon with the large sleeves you built for me Jeff.

The past few years since vet associates are hard to find and a new dog I've been showing have not done much racing, fun to get back into it. Because "I feel the need--the need for speed"! My dog runs agility pretty fast too-so fast he does not concentrate on keeping bars up which DQs us.

Looks like it could use more converter, only flashing to about 46-4700? Where was your torque at? Where u shifting at skip? It just seems light on mph? How come 60 ft is so soft? Are u spinning or bogging?

Darby way softer than I thought it would be on both ends and et, and how it feels, but I haven't had much seat time in any car in a few years. Top line is engine rpm and shifting at 6500 but looks like it goes a little higher . Second line driveshaft rpm and no evidence on it it was spinning and did not feel like it spun. Third line is Gs/accelerometer. Li left off fuel pressure oil pressure and O2 . Fuel was straight line stable, oil the same 70 psi. Wide band showed fat around 10-11 but when I pulled the air cleaner off it lean popped so I would not think it was that fat and I'll use another meter to check it.

Foot braked to about 2000 then launched. Looks to me like started moving about 3700 then flashed up to 4400 or so before it coupled. Effeciency was 13% one run 16% the other. I think the converter is just a little too tight. MPH kept getting better but with 3595 and what it dynoed even with the losses of fan, spacers, mufflers seems low, but first time I have a motor from this dyno. I think I may have to throw in the A-1 that was 5000 behind my old 455 that 60 ft's a lot better with a smaller tire.

Was the 13 and 16% the converter slip across the stripe?

The RAT is the % engine to driveshaft-drop the 1 in the front of the decimal pt. Cursor was close to the lights but not exactly 10.2 and 10.57 sec
