Default What IS the NHRA rule on window nets???????

I went to replace my ribbon-type window net (perfect condition, but cert expired 6-30-19) and they no longer make a net that will fit my chassis. I can have a custom-made net for $100+ shipping. In talking to a major chassis parts supplier, the guy told me it's NOT necessary to replace nets every two years, except on Pro-Mod or Pro-Stock cars. I run Super Pro. He told me to cut off the SFI cert and I would be good to go. I found that hard to believe since I was gigged (but allowed to run) a few years back for an outdated window net at Firebird, where I will be running November 1st at Pontiac Heaven.



Here's what the current NHRA rule book says:


(Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman)


Window Net
A ribbon-type or SFI 27.1 mesh-type window net is mandatory for any full-bodied car running 7.50 to 9.99 or if vehicle runs 135 mph or faster. See General Regulations 6:3.

6:3 WINDOW NET
An SFI 27.1 ribbon-type or mesh-type window net is mandatory on any full-bodied car running 7.49 or quicker. For full-bodied cars running 7.50 to 9.99 or if vehicle runs 135 mph or faster, a ribbon-type or SFI mesh-type window net is mandatory unless otherwise specified by Class Requirements. SFI 27.1 window net, when required, must be updated at two-year intervals from the date of manufacture.............

To me, this says what the chassis parts guy told me: I don't need a current SFI net as long as it's a ribbon-type net (in good shape).


I never used to mind buying an unnecessary new net every two years when they were $40, but I'm sick of bending over for the NHRA and paying for safety I don't need just to keep the window-net manufacturers in business.



For guys running 7.50 to 9.99 in a full-bodied car, what has your experience been??

i had the same experience. A Tech told me i had to replace it or recertify. I called stroud and they said it is not necessary. No one has questioned it since.

I was told to remove the date tag off mine in Fla this year and then it wouldn't need to be replaced. Thought that was odd but went back to the trailer and pulled the tag. No one has even looked since.

We had the same one on Grocery Getter for 17 years. One tech guy (only) griped about the date but let us run anyway. At the time, the rule book kinda implied that they weren't needed if you had arm restraints so I got a pair from RCI, used them and nobody ever asked again.

The way I understood it at the time was that if it had a tag on it, it had an expiration date. So needed changed.

If there is no tag then it must not have an expiration date?

But it would have to appear as unaltered I would say. Don't just ripped it off and have frayed threads etc. They can reject it if the tech guy thinks it is unsafe whether in date or not.

This was also pertaining to the flexplates and SFI bellhousings I think.

If you have a cage and the car runs 11's you need a window net...correct?

Norwalk Tech came over to our site this year and said that under 7.5et, the window net needs to be changed every 2 years.

An SFI 27.1 ribbon-type or mesh-type window net is mandatory on any full-bodied car running 7.49 (*4.49) or quicker. For full-bodied cars running 7.50 (*4.50) to 9.99 (*6.39) or if vehicle runs 135 mph or faster, a ribbon-type or SFI 27.1 mesh-type window net is mandatory unless otherwise specified by Class Requirements. SFI 27.1 window net, when required, must be updated at two-year intervals from the date of manufacture.

7.50 to 9.99 ribbon type doesn't need to be SFI which would have no expiration.
7.50 to 9.99 mesh type is SFI and needs replaced every 2 years.
7.49 and faster needs to be SFI mesh or ribbon and replaced every 2 years.
