Brian, You still interested in reproducing that system?

I am, I just haven't had the time to devote to it. Job, family, and getting this T/A ready for the 2003 race season have eaten up most of my time. I'll have to start checking the Baltimore/DC area for a company that can do fiberglass, as injection molded plastic will probably be too expensive.

I feel your pain regarding lack of time!
I just had someone email me asking about a reproduction system. He also sent a photo of the MN GTO from Redwing POCI.

So 3 confirmed systems exist, right?

3 confirmed. I've heard rumors of one in the southwest from Cobrabill, but not confirmed.

I'll post an ad in Smoke Signals to see how much interest we can get in this. I figure it's going to take at least 50 reproductions to make it economically feasible for everyone involved.

Looks like those were taken at Burdette Brothers in Hyattstown, MD at their show last Sunday. Who took them?

I wasn't there, I was racing at Mason-Dixon in Hagerstown that afternoon.

Briefly talked to John Sawruk at POCI. He said he was one of the engineers who worked on the later Ram Air systems. He confirmed they wouldn't pass EPA driver-by noise standards and didn't make it into production. He didn't know how many were made, but siad they were briefly released into the Pontiac parts system.

That's where Mr. Hoffman (original owner of Phil Griffith's G-A) got most of his R-A parts, right over the parts counter. The "lid" was had from a friend of his who happened to be an engineer at GM at the time (slid out the back door when nobody was looking).

I know this is a older topic but if this ram air system is ever reproduced I would be interested in one for my 73 GTO.

I think it would be possible to sell 50 to 100 depending on the price.

A gentleman named Mark Nouhan from New Jersey tried to get them reproduced more than 10 year ago (sometime around 1989-1990).

He couldn't even get 50 orders, which was the minimum needed to make it economically feasible. The kits were just under $500 each (a bargain if you ask me). I ordered two of them, along with extra foams for replacements later on and the tab was just over $1000. He advertised in Smokes for one year, and even got mention in HPP magazine, but could not come up with the minimum 50 required. He sent everyone's money back.

I beleive Tom Goad lent him his set-up to be copied.

It could be done, but the question is, will people buy it? Not alot of '73 owners out there, even today.

brian, i think you'd have better luck selling them now than 10yrs ago, the market is a lot better and advertising is better with the internet.

I agree. There is more interest in these cars than there was 10-15 years ago. The first step would be to find out how many people would be interested.

What is the ram air cover made of? Is it molded plastic or fiberglass?

The original was an injection molded plastic. To make it economically feasable (even today) we'd have to go the fiberglass route.

I would also be interested in a set. And did you ever look into doing it in carbon fiber? the cost would be some where inbetween fiberglass & injection molded plastic, it would be a more exact copy, stronger than glass & lighter too. A couple of people I know here have had complete body panels repo'd from it at what they considered a resonable price> I will find out what company they were dealing with, It makes a great looking part, it even repoduces the factory flaws.
