Question Can Am Reunion

Hello Everyone. 2007 marks the 30th Anniversary of the great 77 Can Am and I was wondering if there was any interest in having a Can Am reunion next summer in late June or early July in the Midwest area. I have a site in mind but wanted to see how much interest there would be before I proceed on. This much advanced notice would give people plenty of time to complete there projects. To my knowledge there has never been a mass gathering of Can Ams in the double digits since the days of Motortown. I would like to see this become a reality in 2007. What do you guys think? Let me know.

Verne Howard

I may be interested, if only to get the Long Distance Award. I think it'd be exciting to see a bunch of us get together.

What state are you thinking of having it in, so I can start saving for gas money?

Depending on where it is I might be there.

I'm interested, even though my car isn't a Can Am.
I see that you are in Missouri. Would you perhaps be considering Branson for the site?

Sounds like a great idea, Verne...but may I make a suggestion?

I think it would draw more participants if you did it around another Pontiac event, instead of it being a "stand alone" gathering...especially considering lodging and fuel costs these days and people planning vacations around Pontiac events.

How about the largest Pontiac gathering on the planet? The Pontiac Nationals at Norwalk in August? I don't see a huge contingent of Can-Am owners coming from the west, and Norwalk is central to those on the east coast as well as the midwest.

If you talked it over with him, I'm sure Pete Woodruff would be open to setting aside an area on the car show field just for the Can-Ams. Jim Wangers is sure to be there if his health allows (he's 80 now and is slowing down a bit)...plus you'll have hundreds of other Pontiac show and race cars to check out while there, in addition to all of the area attractions. It would be a "win-win" situation for all.

I could make a gathering if not too far from NW Arkansas. Where is the 2007 POCI convention going to be?

I actuallly fired up my CA a couple days to ago to move it so I could cut a tree down. It hasn't been started in over 3yrs. It started on the first hit! A gathering may give me some motivation to the old girl back on the road.

Well...any more ideas or is this one going to die like every other 73-77 A-body thread?

I would expect those of you with Can Ams to make the arrangements. However, I am always ready to put in my two cents worth when asked.
I think that the idea of piggybacking on another event is good in that it will provide more exposure for this era of car, and the Can Am in particular.
On the flip side, I think it would be bad because some people that have Can Ams also have other cars they are more interested in taking to a show/race type event. It might be too much hassle for some to bring more than one car.

So bring one car and leave the other one at home. The 30th anniversary of the Can-Am only comes once, there will be other times to bring the other car.

I like the idea of having it at or near a drag strip. That we could show and race. Here are some ideas: Gateway in St. Louis area, Route 66 in Joliet Illinois, Cordova in Cordova Illinois. I am definitely open to others.

I like the Norwalk idea. And my wife figures we can take the kids to Cedar Point or Kings Isle (not sure of the spelling of either - ask me to spell Busch Gardens or Disneyworld!). I should even have a Can Am by then. And the other Can Am owner in town - yes, there actually is one! - plans to go as well. We just need to figure out where and when. Anything past the Mississippi is probably too far, remember, I'd be coming from east central Florida!

Any new developments on the reunion?
I noticed that POCI is going to be In Tulsa, Oklahoma next year. That's closer to both coasts than Phoenix. And conveniently located near me.

I'll keep bumping this thread until next year if I don't see any action on it.
I'm still wondering about the proposed site. Norwalk sounds like a fine idea. That's about as far as I'd want to travel, but you never know.

Kathy's stoked about it as well. We just need to know where and when so we can plan the whole thing.
