Car looks great Dave. What a huge difference, and I'm sure it drives better.

BFG T/A's are "classic" musclecar tires and look good, I just like to be different (Firestone Firehawk SS20's). Hmm, Ken walked right past my jab about the whitewalls...

Exclamation

I hope Firestone has improved their tires in the last 5 years. The last set I had on one of my Can Ams had poor handling characteristics, and wore out quickly, especially compare to the BFG's I usually use.

I've got Firestone's on both of my daily driver trucks...they're wearing fine.

LOL. Those wheels & tires are just on it so I can move it around. I will probably put the 8" Snowflakes back on it whenever I get it back on the road. But it won't be with BFG's. I don't care for the company at all, their tires are good, just don't like their sales practices.

I deal with a my friends repair shop for tires so I wasn't aware of any bad sales practices. What kind of shenanigans do they play?

I don't know if they still do this or not, maybe you know. I was shopping for all-terrain tires for my truck about 5yrs ago and found out that BFG would not let the tire shops sell their tires below a set price. This may happen a lot but I had never heard of anything like this. Sounded like price fixing to me. So I bought Coopers that time, this time I bought Kumhos. Seems to me like once a dealer buys his inventory he can sell them for whatever price he wants, or give them away if he wants.

Has this become a hijack or a derailment?

She ran a "blistering" 16.58 @ 85 MPH with a 2.7 60' time. Doesn't sound like much, but considering the car was in excess of 4500 lbs. with me and a trunk full of coolers and chairs on board, and that it was set to stock tune 2 years ago after having the carb rebuilt (with the only deviation being the dual exhaust)...I didn't think that was too shabby. I even left it in drive and let the tranny shift itself (no tachometer so I didn't want to tempt fate).
I just took my survivor Can Am to the local track last night. It had 7 almost identical runs at 15.55@87.5. I messed with the timing and got it down to 15.3@89. The 60' ranged from 2.0-2.2 sec. Hopefully there is a high 14 sec. run to be had with some minor mods that can't be seen. I shifted at a indicated 5k rpm. According to the HP calcualtions, the HP for a race weight of 4250 is 275. Not bad for an untouched 100k mile W72..

My first Can Am that didn't have A/C or a lot of options ran a best of 14.9@91 a few years back, but I rejetted the carb and it had an Edelbrock Performer intake.

Needless to say, the car garnered a lot of attention, since it was the only older Pontiac there.

My friends 1980 Monte with a 355 and 3.73 gears ran a decent 14.00@98mph, so I a bit of catching up to do.

Good times Rick! The W72 has a lot of potential. My A/C equipped (though still a lightly optioned car) ran a best of 14.80 seconds many years ago. That was with a stock engine, including cam. Then only mods were rejetting the carb, true dual exhaust, removed the scoop block off plate, and advanced the stock cam 4 degrees. These days, my distributor is getting worn and the valve srpings are getting tired. The car will still hit 15.30s though.

The W72 was a good performer as it was, considering the era it was released. My Can Am has only been down the track once. No tuning was done, no burnout, just drove it up and left the gearshift in drive. Spun out of the hole with a 2.7 60' and ran a 16.54 @ 85. Not bad I thought for a 58,000 original mile "cream puff" and no tuning with a race weight easily in the 4500 lb. area with my fat arse on board.
