Congratulations on your new ride.
Total 32 hrs round trip. 4am Sat - 12 noon Sun. It had to be at least 25 hrs just to drive round trip. Wow did you even have time for sleep.

Actually, we left at 6am, so that was a 30 hr turnaround. I didn't sleep at all, but for some reason I wasn't tired. My friend and I took turns driving the tow vehicle, so it wasn't too bad.

Reminds me of the trip Phil Griffith and I took to get his '73 Grand Am. Left Glen Burnie/Baltimore on a Friday night, 5:30-pm. Arrived at Horicon, WI 7:30-am (central time, so it was like 8:30 to us). Met with the owner and ogled all of his toys (he had a small collection of late 40's Cadillac's, including a Caddy flathead V8 on an engine dyno that he fired up for us...he also had an older Supra, late 80's early 90's, that was turbocharged and making 360-HP...and the spark plug collection and toy car collection was unreal). Had the car loaded and we were on our way home sometime on Saturday afternoon. I was home in my bed by 6:30-am Sunday morning. The entire round-trip was just over 1800 miles.

Thumbs up

We were at John's house for a couple of hours looking over/loading the Can Am, and checking out his awesome '69 Firebird 400 conv. and his ultra rare 455 Ram Air '74 Firebird Formula. Both cars were schweet!

Default some dates, links, and information of interest.

So is the proposed event to be piggybacked at Norwalk the Ames Tri Power Pontiac Nationals, or is there another big Pontiac event there?
If it is that one, the dates on their website are Aug 10-12, 2007. http://www.pontiacnationals.com/
The POCI event at Tulsa is scheduled for July 10-14, 2007.
http://www.indianationspontiac.freeservers.com/
Anyone planning to attend the Tulsa event should be aware of Oklahoma's strange beer law that limits the alcohol content of beer sold in Oklahoma to 3.2%. Either bring your beer with you, switch to hard liquor (which is curiously full strength), plan on a road trip of at least an hour and a half to Missouri, Kansas or Arkansas, or do without. Believe me, if you are used to drinking full strength beer, you will be able to tell the difference.
Another cool event that I don't hear discussed in Pontiac forums much is the Hot Rod Power Tour. Next year's event is scheduled for
Sat June 2 Cleveland, OH IX Center
Sun June 3 Kalamazoo, MI Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds
Mon June 4 Racine, WI Downtown Lakefront
Tue June 5 Springfield, IL IL State Fairgrounds
Wed June 6 Evansville, IN Roberts Stadium
Thu June 7 Memphis, TN Memphis Motorsports Park
Fri-Sat June 8-9 Little Rock, AR AR State Fairgrounds
The event coverage in the November Hot Rod shows several Pontiac participants.

I did a short leg of the Hot Hot Power Tour with my 79 T/A when it rolled through Maryland several years back (1998?). It's highly over-rated in my opinion. You spend more time jaunting on the freeway from one spot to another than you do showing the car and talking with people. Yes, for the Can-Am reunion to work, it would have to be piggy backed onto another major event like Norwalk or the POCI nats.

Default to each his own

Don't take this the wrong way, but based on what I've experienced in "Pontiacland" the vast majority of Pontiac cars are polarized either to the race end of the spectrum or the show only end of the spectrum. Either one only getting very limited road time, if any at all.
Far be it from me to tell anyone how to enjoy their own car, it's yours, do with it as you will. But as for me, I always felt that cars were made to be driven farther than a quarter mile at a time. Not that I don't enjoy going to drag races, I do. I just hate to see vintage cars butchered up into something they're not. And if you want to sit around at a car show, looking at your car and other people's cars, more power to you.
The whole concept of the Power Tour is to offer a venue for people who enjoy driving their cars together. Brian, you only sampled one day of a week long event. How boring it must have been for you to have traveled the same familiar roads around your home state. The idea is to take your cool car somewhere you haven't been before and show it to people that otherwise would likely never get to witness your automotive handiwork. After all, when you die you can't take it with you, so why not drive the hell out of it while you're here?
I think it's pretty cool that so many people get together and take a road trip together to places they wouldn't necessarily select for themselves. Life is a journey, not a destination.

Point taken. I do drive the Can Am to every show. It's only been on a trailer twice in its life. Once to go to Norwalk and once for a local World of Wheels show in Baltimore in the dead of winter. Driven it to Pontiacs in the Park at VMP the last 3 years in a row. What I find is the older I get, with two kids now, the less time I have to enjoy any Pontiac event. That and the prospect of putting more and more miles on what is already a relatively low mileage "collector" car, relegates the car to the garage most of the time.

I realize this event could be as much as 8 to 10 months out but for scheduling and planning purposes a location and date needs to be decided on ASAP.

I agree, this is important to a lot of us, but as with many 73-77 owners out there, we all don't have enclosed trailers pulled by new turbo diesel trucks. I just can't say I'm going to Ohio for the weekend and jump in my car and go, I'll need as much time as possible to prepare for a journey like that. Please Verne let us know ASAP! I've got a lot of work to do......David

The news is finally here. I wanted to let this post run for awhile to get the opinions of many people and a decision has been reached.

The 1977 Can Am reunion will be held at the POCI Nationals, July 10th -14th, 2007 in Tulsa, OK.

More details will follow as the plans are still coming together.
I will have more info in the next few weeks but I wanted to get the word out on time and place so people can start to plan. Let's set a new record of the most Can Ams in one place since Motortown.

I will start a new thread when more info is available.

Thanks To All!
Verne

Finally, a date and a place! Let the planning begin!! Some of you will have a short trip, while most of us are looking at a much longer journey. I think I'll try and trailer mine....I have the trailer, just have to rent a truck that can make it that far. I hope we can all get together. David
