I am just amused at how much conversation this topic is getting. even made bill and Jim sign up to join in, who by the way are great guys with awesome 73's and alot of knowledge. I painted mine red to match my stripe and decals so doesnt matter to me either way, but still fun to read.

Now that's the spirit!

If I paint mine white then my hood will be Blue and White and that's the colours of the Toronto Maple Leafs and that might just be enough to help them beat the Boston Bruins in the next two games and make the playoffs! Gotta go now, I know I have a few rattle cans of white paint in the basement.

Well I might have to paint my white scoops Sabres blue & gold because Toronto ain't gettin by the Sabres for the final playoff spot. T.O. got lucky Friday against the Sabs and Saturday night against Ottawa. They still have a lot of hill to climb...

Oops, I thought ths was the NHL blogs. Never mind.

I got a 350 2-bbl motor sitting in the garage. I'll have to check that out along with the part numbers on the 4-bbl air cleaner base.

I'll give you this, your arena is nicer than ours and those huge roast beefs on a bun with Genesee Draft, you know how to serve food in Buffalo!

The air cleaner bases that would work could come from a 73-74 Trans Am or 74 GTO. These sit 1" lower than normal 4bbl air cleaners.

"Back in the day" the 73-75 Grand Ams I saw had black scoop inserts. Grand Ams were all built at the Pontiac plant. I don't recall anything about any other A-bodies back then.

I had a black '73, it was all body color, while black it wasn't flat or semi or anything, just body color.

Here's the 73 GA television commercial on YouTube, white GA with white scoops(you can see they're white with the black backplates at the end). http://youtube.com/watch?v=n5Kn9g_Gsjw

This is a factory photo of the 73 GTO, pretty sure those scoop inserts are black.

The Florentine red '73 GTO I parted out had black scoops, not body color. The car was an original paint, 4 speed rustbucket.

The '73 SD GTO is for sale on eBay. This is such a beautiful car. Anybody want to guess how much this car will go for? I just hope it goes to a good home.

Default 73 gto on ebay

I think he will get offered between 20.000 and 25.000, far less than he is asking. I saw it at the show in ohio and its flawless. It is a one of a kind and should set a record for amount paid for a 73 gto. unfortuanatly 73 gtos are still unappreciated. I would love to see him get what he wants, if I had the money I would love to buy it. its great to see someone put that much effort into restoring a 73 gto!

I have bought and sold 7 or 8 hoods in the last 30 years (73 vintage with louvers and 74-75 vintage without) and to the best of my recollection all scoops were painted body color and the plastic honeycomb closeout plates were natural black. I have a set of NOS scoops that are natural black (molded black). I know the closeout covers were natural black, as I bought a few sets at my dealer back in the early 80's when I did my GTO. They tended to to warp from engine heat after a few years, so I was replacing them with straight ones on my daily driver '73 LeMans SC.

My collection of PMD Car Distribution Bulletins refers to the "Ram Air Hood" option as being on hold thru November 30, 1972, at which time it was officially canceled. The UPC Code WU3 Ram Air Hood was to be available on 2-door LeMans, LeMans Sport Coupe, and Grand Am models only. If you wanted to equip your LeMans with a Ram Air Hood, all you had to do is know the part numbers for all the pieces and place an order. I've seen one car with a complete system ordered back in late 1972 from the parts list. I suspect if just a hood was purchased over the parts counter and painted to match the car, the owner had the choice to paint the scoops or not. I could not find a UPC for a non-Ram Air Hood option.

Even though it was "officially" discontinued in November 1972, the Ram Air Hood option was still a requirement with the SD455 option on the above models. As we all know, the UPC Code LS2 4-bbl. 455 SD engine option was on hold for all Pontiac models (including B and G bodies) until late in the production year when it was released for Formula Firebirds and Trans Ams only. No WU3 Ram Air Hood packages made it to production.

Just a point of information, my original 1973 GTO window sticker identifies the hood in "GTO Option" as "N.A.S.A. HOOD SCOOPS" and the cut sheet for the 1973 GTO Option in my Pontiac Dealer Binder just calls it "Dual Hood Scoops". The 1973 Pontiac Accessories brochure on page 21 calls out under the GTO Option "Dual Air Hood Scoops (N.A.S.A. type)".
Jack Hoffman's Grand Am was ordered in late '72 and if memory serves he took delivery in January of '73. He ordered all of the hood pieces to make the ram-air functional over the parts counter. The most important piece, the lid that fits over the filter pan, he got from a friend who was an engineer at GM at the time that "just happened to have one on a shelf at the office" - so to speak. This is the black car that was featured in PE or HPP (I forget which) more than 10 years ago, that is currently owned by Phil Griffith. Jack ordered it as a SD-455 with a 4-speed and ram-air, I think in the 3rd or 4th week of November (Phil still has the documentation from Jack), but it was obviously delivered with the 400 sans ram-air. Jack was upset at the time, because the dealer didn't tell him, they just called to say the car was coming in...I don't even think the dealership knew until it arrived that it wasn't going to be a ram-air SD-455. Jack rectified it by installing his own SD-455 from the correct parts he collected over the following 18 months after taking delivery. Ironically (from all the stories I've heard), the rods weren't the hardest pieces for Jack to get...the block and the intake were. Jack substituted a block from a '73 Grand Prix that was totalled in a rear ender, and installed a '70 R.A. IV intake instead...otherwise it is a numbers correct '73 SD-455.

Indeed...this silver 73 is a beautiful restoration...makes me wish I had the money to purchase and a place to store it. What intake is on the car?

Brian - The car had an aluminum 455 HO intake on it at Dayton, don't remember the exact casting though.
