Default Grand Am GTO

Since I have just recently joined the PY forums I was not able to get in on this original discussion. However, I thought this was worth adding, it also fits some threads I saw in other forums on GTOs after the original GTO. In April 1981 I received this flyer in the mail. You are correct if you guessed I don't throw anything away. When Thom mentioned his car had GTO stickers on it at some point, it made me think of this car. This is an 8 1/2" x 11" 2-sided sheet. The one side has three pictures of the car and ordering information for the kit to transform your Grand Am into a GTO. The kit was $249.00, reduced from $289.00. The other side was the reprint of a story from Thunder Am magazine about the car. The guys name doing this was Bruce Weeks, anyone know Bruce, or know if he is still in the hobby? I am attaching pictures of the flyer, I thought you guys might enjoy this. Tim

Tim, Thanks for this reprint of info and the Thunder Am reference.

I subscribed to TA when it was new (like many others here on this board) and remember that it was THE ONLY PONTIAC magazine that is now High Performance Pontiac Magazine. I remember reading Bruce Weeks submissions to the mag but do not know anymore than that. Perhaps Zazarine, Statham, etc. could shed light and more info about him for you.

Good stuff!

Interesting. I wonder how many other people tried to recreate the GTO. I know they stuck it on a Sunfire in Canada.

Really ? I'm not saying it never happened but I must have missed that one. Do you have any photos. The Sunfire GT was offered for sale here but I thought the Sunfire was built in Mexico and never built in Oshawa.

Do you have any details on the Sunfire GTO ? I'll ask the guys on Canadian Poncho and see what they can come up with.

I have to admit to never seeing or knowing about a Sunfire GTO BUT this is from one of the Canadian Poncho guys who has worked for 20+ years at the same GM dealer in Manitoba:

Our former service advisor had one.

Just a couple of decals, nothing more. Sad...........

In '78 that was good performance, especially compared to all the 110 horse 231 V6s they dropped in those cars

This would have been a really cool car if they would have built them.

Sad part is that the base engine in the '77 A body was the same 231..

So a Can Am running a 16.5-17.0 quarter mile was downright quick for '77. Wow, how times have changed.

Default GACA #2 on display at Pontiac Heaven 2012

I had GACA #2 on display at Pontiac Heaven 2012... Great job, Steve, on the event once again! And thanks to both HPP and Smoke Signals for the recent event coverage!

For GACA#2's trek to this year's event, it was treated to all of the typical routine maintenance (tune, carb rebuild (Thanks to Paul Carter!!) trans service, etc, etc. Cosmetically, I had a new windshield installed and I replaced both front and rear window reveal mouldings with freshly-powder-coated Satin Black trim. What a HUGE difference that makes.

Car is running/driving really well, and yes, it is still for sale. ($9,500 includes a complete straight, rust-free stock 1978 Grand Am 2-door parts car PLUS a whole bunch of extra parts that I've accumulated.)

UPDATE (JAN 14, 2015): The Grand Am CA #2 has been SOLD (along with the parts car) to a buyer from Nevada who has expressed an interest in returning it to how it appeared in HOT ROD Magazine. Let's wish him the best and keep our fingers crossed that this neat piece of Pontiac history will be properly preserved and appreciated!

Glad you were finally able to sell it to some one interested in keeping this odd ball piece of Pontiac History around.
Hope to see it restored back to the magazine testing state!

I stumbled across an old Car and Driver and the 301 had been bumped up to 190 horses @ 4500 rpms and the car did 1/4 mile in 16.5 secs. Pretty fast for a 1978 or 79 model.

Bill,

If you can access them, you should add the articles from Hot Rod 11/78 and 2/79, which cover the Black GACA. I have copies of both if you want me to scan them for you. The magazines got wet, and I was able to save the articles, but I don't have the covers.
