I have been considering new GTO or even G8 seats for my project. I wonder how hard it would be to get them to fit properly?

Those seats must have been reupholstered at some time in the past, since that's not original material and they look to have been re-done. Not unusual of course to have needed to recover the seats on an old car.

They could have been, grandpa talked to the original owner back in the day and there was no mention of the seats being redone. I found a decoder online I'll check the body plate this weekend.

We got a lot of small parts ordered so hopefully this weekend we can get most of the assembly done.

Could you tell me where I might find interior information on what material was used or available.

Quick update. I read the body plate and I'm pretty sure the interior code is 556 but the decoder doesn't list a 556. We did find some odd looking bolt holding the drivers seat.

here is the decoder I used
http://ultimategto.com/cgi-bin/stats...3&f1=dataplate

We freed the car and are about to start the assembly. I'll post more later.

In the GTO, the material used on all seats was vinyl. Replacement material is available from SMS Auto fabrics. They have NOS yardage available. A upholstery shop will have to make the new covers from the old ones as patterns. Fortunately the seat cover design is pretty simple.

Here is a listing for 1973 LeMans Sport Material on their site:

Well, according to my literature, the 556 code isn't listed. It might be a factory error. The codes for black interior are 565 for black vinyl bench or 561 for black vinyl bucket seats. The code 64 is for Ascot Silver.

Thats weird about that interior code, is 556 a code for any other Pontiacs? I googled but didn't find anything.
We knew the car has been repainted but always thought that it was gold and just given a respray. We found a few spots with evidence of silver paint. We aren't sweating the originality of the car though.

First thing we did was uncage the beast.

We put it up on stands and started the day.

Heres how we ended the day

We bolted up the exhaust, connected the fuel lines and transmission lines. Still waiting on a few parts and we need to bolt the torque converter up. I'm still waiting on the service manual and am hoping that it details the vacuum lines well. We are going to get it running and then worry about the a/c.

Thanks for all the info canamman!

You're welcome. I looked all over and I could not find the 556 code for any '73 model. Ascot Silver was never very silverish. It always had a rather Champagne look to it, so the respray looks a lot like the other Ascot cars I have seen/owned.

Do yourself a huge favor and $h!tcan that Pep-Boys aluminum flex-fan and replace it with the proper OEM fan and clutch. Your engine will run much cooler and you won't be eating up HP driving that flexer that does nothing but make noise.

Default '73 Interior codes

I also have a Ascot Silver '73 that has the the code 556 for trim. I will discuss this with Eric White, the author of the GTOAA Ilustrated Identification Guide. I thought that maybe the 556 was used for late model cars (not the 256 that is listed) but my car was built the third week of Oct. (early car). Will find an answer for this and get back to you. Jon

It was hard getting up this morning after a late night out and 1 or 3 too many drinks. After purging my stomach I finally made it to the goat. First thing I did was clean the intake so I could mount the carb. Hooking up the fuel line was a pain in the ass, we had to make some custom bends for it to fit.

We wired up the starter, put the new plugs and wires on, hooked the battery up and we were ready to go.

http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...t=DSCN3824.flv

First thing we noticed was the starter screaming like crazy, we put some shims in it but its still grinding. Second, as you can see in the video the fan and pulley looked a little wobbly. We took it apart and found that the water pump was bent, so up to the parts store we go. We got a new water pump, put it all back together and thats how we ended the day.

We still have to get the radiator in, get the timing right and the vacuum lines hooked up.
It runs and thats a big step
