Wow! Congrats to all involved. That is one Bad Tri-shield. This is now the official Buick thread on the best Pontiac Forum.
4.750 bore center and 4.5 bore will give us Pontiac faithful nightmares.
Best of luck at the track. Be safe...

Looks pretty badass! I used to run with some Texas Buick guys Ray Witt out of Dumas, Terry Paulk here in Houston and Jim Turner with a stage II up Jim Robertson's way.

Jim Turner's Stage II GS car out of little Bronte Texas was a blast and was fast. Gary's hot rod will make it look like it was running in slow motion.

Love Jim! He's a great guy and in my eyes, Buick "Royalty". I drew inspiration from his old blue car among others in my younger years.

Gary,
Not sure if you ever met him but the man behind Turner's heads, intakes and engines was Mark Samford...a hardcore Buick guy. Samford is my machinist, consultant in all my engine projects and a very close friend. He has built a lot of fast, dependable Buicks over the years. Best of luck with yours.

Looked like the Buick monster wanted to jump off the dyno at end of pull.

Jim,

Small world!

It was over 20 years ago, but Mark did a set of iron Buick heads for me. If memory serves, that was based on Jim T's recommendation. This was when Mark was with Sunset. Never met him, but I have had several phone conversations with him.

Jim Turner ran with a guy from San Antonio(maybe a dentist) when we did the NMCA stuff that had a really bad GS high dollar parts maybe even back halfed.

Another NMCA Top Stock Buick racer in the NMCA got torn down and had illegal aluminum rods. Next race he was almost .75 slower!

Aluminum rods worth .75 ? Has to be more to the story.
Aluminum rods themselves don't get you much more power at all, if any. If he just changed to steel rods with the same pistons he lost a little CR.

No but that was the most obvious "violation". Replacement motor may have just been a thrown together one also to make the next race. Steve Cagle was his name. You could only pocket port/gasket match and a lot of other restrictions. Class winners got P&G'd for CI to be sure that was not "fudged", checked carb venturi sizes as different carbs got factored different HP. HP for headers over manifolds, HP add for aluminum factory intake and even more for aluminum aftermarket intake.Classes were car wt/factored HP. And all of that for just a trophy! Heck one guy with a Roadrunner had an 18 wheeler rig to come to the races in. Classes were heads up then class indexes. for finals.

One Pontiac racer with a black bubble top Ventura(I think last name Robb and maybe a '61) had to come torn down to check heads as he had everyone in the class covered so much. Had those giant long branch manifolds and early SD heads I think.

Richard Mann was the gentleman that Jim was teamed up with. They went 9.50's almost 20 years ago. That car was bought by a friend of mine up here in Ohio.

Yep that was him. It was an awesome well done car. But did take some spare parts in the trailer just in case it broke!
