Default 1st time at the track with the 517

After 3+ years I made it to Thompson Dragway and got some passes in. I was rusty but the car ran like a champ. I drove it 100 miles round trip without a hiccup, even so some changes need to be made before I go back.

Air was pretty good with DA’s averaging 1000-1200 but with a nasty 10-15 MPH constant head wind. The prevailing winds are usually from the west-northwest but they were blowing dead east today straight down from the finish line to the starting line.

1st pass staged at 1600, red lit and pulled a 1.467 60’ and ran a 10.70 @124+. I played with the governor weights and had it shifting at 5700 on the street after driving for awhile but the extra traction and having cool transmission fluid had the 1-2 shift happening around 6600 which made it hit the rev limiter. The 2-3 happened at 6000 which was ok. That needs to be addressed, it shutdown for an instant at the top of 1st when it bumped the limiter and surely cost some momentum.

The plugs looked rich so I changed the main air bleeds on the primary side to 28’s from 25’s. I staged at 1400 to try not to red light but it didn’t work. -.085. It also blew the tires off all through1st and popped the trim rings off of the rear RalleyII’s. I should know better but I like the way it looks with them on. Ran 1.718 60’,11.222 124.54 bumping the rev limiter in 1st.

Last pass bumper tire pressure 2lbs to 23 since the sidewalls on the 275 Hoosier DR’s we’re getting crushed. Staged at idle, still red lit, 1.48,10.75@124.

Getting the shifts down to 6000 should help times since not only won’t it hit the limiter but it was going way over the powerband. On the bright side I love the Hoosier DR’s. When I spun them I hadn’t got all of the water off from the burnout, rusty again. They ride so much better and hook better than the bias QTP’s I was using. The TSP 9.5” converter is all I hoped it would be and more. Tight driving and wheels up launches.

My buddy videoed the runs from the starting line so if he sends them I’ll post them, even the one where the trim rings flew off in perfect synchrony. I think it did good for the first time out. The carb is still rich on the top end and I was running 36 total timing. It made best power on the dyno @ 38. I feel 10.50’s are where it will be after tightening some things up.

Congrats!

Sounds like some good times. Do you even need water to do a burnout?

I bet the tech guy had a talk with you after the rings flew off?

I remember reading the NHRA rule book, years ago. Hubcaps, center caps, trim rings were not allowed. They probably let you slide, thinking your 17 second Pontiac wouldn't even be back for a second pass....LOL

They were pretty cool about it. The tires spun hard and rattled a little on that pass and the both rings flew off at exactly the same time. I wish I could keep them on since the car looks totally stock with the fully dressed Ralleys.

As far as the red light problem the only thing I can think to do is get taller front tires but the 68 wheel wells limit how tall you can go before the tires hit the back corner of the fender on turns. I have 205/75/15 now, about 27” tall. Maybe a 215/75/15 if anyone still makes that size. I thought if anything I’d be slow on the light because of age and lack of practice.

I looked at Walmart.com they show 4 tires the size you mentioned, so they are likely available to you some how...

Dont know how you staged but try to shallow stage more next time.

Wish there was a track closer to me.

Great! You and anyone riding in the car will enjoy taking off from a stoplight with that power.
What was the front tire pressure? Lowering them will slow reaction time, but probably not enough for what you need.
Hope you can get to the dragstrip again this year.
Also, are you planning to bracket race without manually shifting the trans?

It has 32psi in the front. 215/75’s are almost 3/4” taller. With some pressure changes they may be the ticket.
I like leaving it in drive for the brackets, it makes the car deadly consistent. When I get beat it’s always because I screwed something up. The way the governor is now if you manually shift it will still hang in gear until the springs and weights are ready to do their thing.

Wow, great first time out. After getting more seat time, the lights will slow down. That's one fast street car!

Is that a 4.35 x 4.35 combo?

Nice runs for sure. Glad the TSP converter is making the grade. We've been getting excellent feedback from them, and other customers who have the higher stall versions are remarkably surprised at how they drive on the street......Cliff
