Yeah, I doubt 180hp shut anyone up, unless they fell asleep.

To keep it relative, how did those '78 Mustangs perform?

Most of the late model Mustang V6's are mid to high 13 sec cars. At 12.9, you are an exceptional driver with outstanding conditions...

My previous comment is still relevant. Makes more sense.

those cars are very tempermental. to get the best et out of them they need to be totally cooled down. I would push the car to the starting line and start it and it would be good for a best 12.9 to 13.1 after that if you went another round and the car was warm it would drop to a 13.3 to 13.5. the buick guys were always putting ice on theirs.

Grandam73 I think if you look at the correct figures you'll find that you have the 100 disadvantage with the olds engine. The olds engine is heavier then the Pontiac engine. The heads alone are almost 12 lbs heavier per each head more then the Pontiac head. Plus the cranks are more in the olds engine because they have to be as they had to build them heavier because no olds engine has ever been or has ever been a 4 bolt block. olds didn't think a 4 bolt block was needed, but when you add good power to them you need them. Thats why Mondelo went to splayed blocks to be able to keep them from coming apart.

I haven't weighed Pontiac heads. But the rest of your reference is rubbish. Back to the topic.

I hate to say it but I have had them all, and still have a few

They are all slow, and by today's standards a BMW X3 suv will mop all these cars up.

But who cares these cars were the coolest when I was teen, do I need to mention that the bandit had
16.0 quarter mile times
And the sd 455 May have cracked into the thirteens with a tail wind

The 403 was a good all round engine for every day usage but the Pontiac mill looked better

Slow by today's standards, arguably.

By the standards of the day, best in class. Most cars then were 18 plus sec. in the quarter.

I'm happy with the mid to high 14 sec times my '77 runs. Might not be the fastest on the block, but sure gets more looks than any late model gets.

I'd be in a lot of trouble if I put Heavy Duty big block springs under my 403 as is used for the Pontiac engines, can't think of why they do that.

I didn't say Big Block pontiac, so don't put words in my mouth, especially misspelt ones and badly phrased comments that show your poor grasp of the English language. I'm referring to BBC springs often used for Pontiac engines. Why is this, because of the extra weight. And the word is you're. And don't PM me anymore, it's embarrassing that you can be so high up on your wagon, and have so far to fall.

Back in the late 80's I had a friend who had a 79 403 T/A brown with a camel interior. Very pretty combo BTW. was not a quick car, but he had a local guy build him a 455 olds & then re-geared it. That thing absolutley ripped & looked completely stock. I was never a big fan of the 403, but I think thats because it was considered a smog engine (not unlike everything in 1979) & I always associated it with the "big" cars. In reality it wasn't all that much different from the std 400 pontiac IMO. No comparison to the W72 however. those cars where night & day for the time.

Wasn't there some tests done between the 400 & 403 & they were fairly competitive? I think the 400 squeaked out ahead, but not by a whole bunch. Just currious.

Rex, have you ever had an Olds 403? I have 3 of them. And I have 4 Pontiacs. So, having both of them, it's very obvious to me that the 403 is a lighter engine than the Pontiac. I've handled the heads on both, and the Olds heads are smaller and lighter than Pontiac heads. The Olds 350 and 403 are both "small block"(short deck) Olds engines in case you didn't know. I wouldn't be surprised if the 403 is lighter than an Olds 350, because the 403 has windowed mains, and siamesed bores, due to the largest bore of just about any GM V8...bigger bores than Pontiac 455, Chevy 454, and any other Olds engine. So, bigger bore equals less iron. Never heard of anyone doing spayed main bearing caps on a 403, since the mains are windowed, I don't believe that would work. They are strengthened using a girdle.

Also, for documented proof, every engine weight chart I've seen shows the Pontiac engine being around 90 lbs heavier than the Olds small block. Below is a link to a chart showing the weight of an Olds 350 at 560 lbs., and Pontiac 400 at 650 lbs. The Pontiac is even 45 lbs heavier than the "big block"(tall deck) Olds 455! http://www.carnut.com/specs/engdim.html

So, it really is obvious that any Olds engine is lighter than a Pontiac. The Olds V8 got better mileage and produced less emissions than Pontiac engines. As a result, the Olds 307 lasted until 1990 because it was the only GM engine able to meet US emissions standards with a carburetor.

Winna!!!! The Olds 403 is indeed lighter than even an Olds 350, as you suggest. And your inference that the Olds 403 is actually considered an Olds small-block by Olds people needed saying as well. Sorry, 403 TATA owners, there's a small block in your silver car.
