old gas
I have two cars in storage. They have 5 years of old gas in them. Can I add new gas and some additive to start them up and take to fuel station, or do I have to
drain the tanks? Last edited by Bluesugar; 12-18-2023 at 04:49 PM. |

Take off the gas cap and get a good whiff of how it smells. I'd say your best choice is to drain the tanks and start over. Besides the old gas that's likely turned into varnish, the tanks may also be full of rust.

IF, IF the old gas STILL smells like gas and NOT varnish you might be able to add some fresh gas and run it, like t hat. You never know how long gas is going to keep.
If it does smell like varnish, it's done, period!!! Most tanks don't have a drain plug. You will likely have to siphon the old gas out. When you think the tank is empty, add about a gallon of fresh gas, then siphon that out too. It will insure getting all the remnants of the rotten gas completely removed.... Yes, I've done this!!!
