Default curb weight

Saw a nice looking Blue 71-2 today on the East West expressway.
Made me think that maybe it wouldnt be a bad choice for a street
strip model. Ive always had Firebirds and wonder if the X body is
lighter or about the same.Title weight of my 68 Firebird is 3055#.
Yes its a bare knuckles fighter.

Between 3200 and 3350............thats curb weight, shipping weight is a little bit less. No problem getting them down to 3000 or less.

They can be close in weight, but a ventura is actually a larger car overall.

Mine is 3250 all steel without me,(3450 w/me) with aluminum heads and some hidden lightening done. They aren't as light as everyone thinks.

Controversial topic for sure. I truly believe the 73-74 Venturas must have a lot more metal in them for the newer safety requirements. I can only speak for my 1971 Ventura, (Which is before the impact rated safety bumpers and any added crash beams). I did remove my inner fender wells, heat/AC delete, partial interior removed, minitubbed, 16 gal poly-fuel cell, swapped from power to manual steering, 4 tube headers, and aluminum wheels. Other than the aforementioned changes my "All Steel" 71 weighed 3060 lbs without my 235lbs. I have dropped the weight by at least 50-70 more pounds and plan on finding another 50-100 lbs before next Spring. I'm shooting for a 3125-3150 lb race weight! JD

My cell is mounting in the trunk with only the sump hanging below the trunk pan. I may have to fabricate a "shield" for the sump if I ever race at a strict NHRA track. JD

Yes its a bare knuckles fighter.
Pontiac's listed shipping weight for the '68 hrdtp is 3032, 3294 for the cnvt.

For 1971 the SWs are as follows:
Ventura II
2-dr cpe - 3076
4-dr sdn - 3116
Firebird
2-dr hrdtp - 3164
Esprit - 3423
Formula - 3473
Trans Am - 3578
GTO (for comparative purposes)
2-dr hrdtp - 3619
2-dr cnvt - 3664
All of these weight figures came out of the GM Parts Division Pontiac Illustration Catalog 11/1/74.

Please everyone, don't flip out. Just lighten up and take this posting "Tounge in Cheek" Little humor between Ric and I. JOHN

LOL John...
As you imply, even though my handle is GTORIC, I am familiar with the rest of the Pontiac lineup. Hey, you and I need to get again together this summer! One of these years I will find time to get my '74 on the road. Dustoff? Gratiot? Woodward?

Yea I guess I dont know what Im talking about....
Maybe I go to a Cheby board and try and carry on an intelligent conversation there.
Now Im sure Ill stick to my First Gen Birds in lieu of an X body for a race car.
My 67 post coupe Tempest Sprint is lighter than that.

No one said that you didn't know what you were talking about, I just couldn't figure out why you restated FG Firebirds, so I listed the shipping weight for the '68 bird in addition to the '71 info for comparison. I thought that the PMD sourced shipping weight figure was very close to your title weight. By the way the listed SW for the '67 Tempest coupe was 3110 lbs.

Intelligent conversation on the Chebby boards?

Cammer,
Did'nt rub anyone the wrong way, just thought it was funny when you said 1st and 2nd gen worlds apart!! Been messing with Pontiacs 25 years, know most of the lines, and gtoric has written articles in major pontiac mags before, so he's not exactly wet behind the ears either. LOL Oh well, no harm, no foul. Just having some fun. JOHN
P.S. Like Rob said, unless you lighten them up, they are not as light as everyone thinks!! 71-72's are a little lighter.
