Hey Steve,
Have your son get an alternator belt that is the same width as the power steering belt. If he has two different widths they tend to squeel at higher rpms as they are trying to battle each other for turning the same distance of water pump pully at the same time, with one belt sitting lower in the groove than the other. Unfortunately, most manufacturers have gone to narrower belts for the old cars. I just bought two new belts for my Formula and had to search a while on rockauto.com for a matching set from Goodyear. Rockauto actually lists the widths for each belt, and they were cheap - around $10 total with shipping. Napa is the worst - they are way too thin. Great thread! |

Steve
We were having trouble getting the right belts even though I know exactly what the pulleys came off of; that old one is just a test fit belt and we haven't gotten around to getting a new one to match yet. TY though for the advice. Steve |

Yes, they have to be the exact same width, taper and style (cogged/non-cogged), otherwise you'll get the official, patented "Pontiac Scream".

Powder coating the pulleys also seems to make a nice atmosphere for the scream, even in one belt applications
Johnny, of course! |

Here is Shay at the Pontiac Event in Tulsa back in April. In this pick he was about 5'8; now he's taller than me at 6'1 and still growing. He is driving around Muskogee these days chasing girls and what not.

That's alright! He's cruising around in the cars we cruised around in at his age. I love that.
