Ok It is a 72 lemans if i read this correct. The vin is a 2d3712a

boby plate
st72-23537 a177626 body

tr272a51-b 75 75 paint

d4c 264785680240

not sure of the rest.

The vin should read 2####1A######. The "d" you have listed is incorrect, check your vin number, the "a" would be the Atlanta plant this would be for a 71. But according to your body plate 23537, and vin# it would be a 72 Lemans hardtop. The GTO was an option in 72 and the "1" you have listed is for the engine size.

I don't see a "1" listed in my book for engine displacement. The 75 75 on the cowl tag would be for Cardnial Red, and 272 would be an Ivory interior.

The "D" is correct and in the correct position for a '72 LeMans.

You are mistaken- in '72 a 2D37 is a Lemans/GTO 2 dr ht

I did say the "d" was incorrect for a 71, but is correct for a 72, I guess I just didn't word it very well.

This is basically true but, there are some more things.
If you can find the original windwo sticker or build sheet, it would show everything.
'72 was the first year that the engine installed in the car is also in a vin.
A Lemans was offered with more engine options than a GTO.
GTOs could only have a 400 or 2 455s.
The 455HO letter is "X"
the 455 d port is "Y"
do not remember what the 400 letter was, I am sure others here do.

If your vin does not have any of those 3 letters, it cannot be a GTO. If it does, I can be but, not positively because the 400 and 455s were also avail in the Lemans.

Most lemans that year had 350s, probably 95% of them.

The standard GTO engine for 1972 was the "L78", 400 4V, dual exhaust. Fifth VIN character was a "T".

Thus, a 1972 GTO hardtop VIN would begin with "2D37T" - 400 4V, "2D37Y" - 455 4V, or "2D37X" - 455HO.

Be aware though - a 1972 LeMans 2 dr hardtop with those same engine options would have the same first five VIN characters. In that case, the ONLY way to determine in the car was indeed equipped with the GTO option is to order up a PHS invoice.

To confuse things even further, there were a small number of 2 door post coupe LeMans and GTOs built in 1972. Their VINs begin with "2D27" . . .

The vin is 2d37t so it should of come with a 400 and it has 46 heads on it. So it could be a gto.

Could be, and the odds are that it is. Not many L78 optioned non-GTO '72 LeMans were built.

Just a "heads" up though, casting #46 cylinder heads are incorrect. Should be "7K3" cast heads on a '72 400 4V. The 46 casting cylinder head was used in 1969 on certain 400 and 428 engines, as well as several 1973 and 1974 350 engines.

If the car appears to not have been midified much, you can also check the front sway bar. GTOs came standard with a 1 1/8" front and the lemans did not unless it was ordered with it ( not common ).
So, if you see a smaller than 1 1/8" sway bar on the front, it is not likely a GTO as it is doubtful someone would install a smaller sway bar.

A "T" engine coded 72 Lemans is fairly uncommon, most were 350s.
