Default radiator for 455

I'm planning to replace the 326 engine in my 67 Lemans with a 72 455. I'm assuming my 40 year old radiator will not be up to the task. What would be an appropriate replacement? Thnx

Brewski,

Give us some more info on the 455.
Is it going to be built up for cruising, street/strip or all out?
Ive heard and read that 455's tend to run hotter than the other sizes.

The biggest one you can fit in there. I have a '64 GTO. I went with a Griffin 19" X 26" 1-1/4" tube radiator. I think this is the one (I would have to double check): http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku It's the biggest I could fit in my car without cutting the core support. The standard aluminum radiators have 1" tubes. I found out by searching for the link that they offer 1-1/2" tubes as well. I wish I would have known that when I bought mine. These are listed as "circle track" radiators.

JS, Thanks. Are these available with transmission line cooling for my automatic?
SD, The 455 has just been rebuilt to stock specs, .30 over. The heads were swapped from 114cc to 96cc chambers for a cr of around 9 and a half. The cam is mild and the rockers are stock at 1.5. Not built up, just a strong stock 455. This is intended as a daily driver.

I used a Be Cool aluminum radiator in mine. A direct bolt in. Also make sure you use a fan shroud.

Thumbs up

To get the tranny cooler line fittings in the rad, you'll have to buy one of the "direct fit units" either from Griffin, Rodney Rad, Be cool, etc, or you can run a universal fit model like mentioned in a previous post and run a "external" seperate tranny cooler. just depends on what your budget is.

Do you have a 4 row radiator now? If you do it may be fine for the job.

just remember it's not always about the size of the radiator
its about air flow and approriate circulation too
guess you can say to make sure all pieces to the puzzle are there and functioning correctly

If you want to spend the money a new radiator is a great investment, if you are on a budget, let us know if you have a 2 core or a three core. I had a great stock three core in my 67 Tempest which I used when I swapped out my 326 for my worked 462. I was running about 220 degrees, realizing this was too hot, I put in not one, but two bottles of Water Wetter
http://www.redlineoil.com/products_coolant.asp
and never ran above 190 all Summer long, never had a problem.
