Default head gasket re-torque

Just got the 403 back together with new Cometic head gaskets. Plan to fire it up tomorrow to make sure everything is okay. What do you guys recommend as far as when to re-torque? A certain # of heat cycles or miles or 1/4 passes?

I can't say what others do but I re-torque next day after the first warm up, then after the first meeting, then a couple of times per season. Loosen and re-torque one nut at a time following the factory tightening pattern.

Cometic doesn't recommend re-torquing their head gaskets. If your 403 build is using and OEM Olds block hopefully you switched to head studs...if so I'd run the engine several heat cycles and then re-torque. If your using head bolts I wouldn't re-torque them.

Paul, thanks for the input. I have gotten differing opinions on this subject; some say retorque even with the Cometics and as you say it is not recommended by Cometic. I thought about switching to studs but decided at my power level it was not needed. The old set of Cometics lasted 7 years and probably would have lasted longer if there hadn't been an issue with the heads. My machinist had to take .006 off the face because they were high in the middle. The fire ring on these Olds heads is really narrow and especially after the .024 overbore. There is no margin for error.
