Need help with top of cowl detail
We are almost ready to paint my Norwood built '74 T/A. Car is Admiralty blue with the blue interior. Of all the pics I took while disassembling, I didn't take any of the top of the cowl showing paint detail there. I know the dash blue comes down a ways on top of the cowl, but how far? Also, would the blue from the dash be covering black from the firewall or the red/brown primer? Pics please if you have any!

Simply overspray from dash coverage and would differ from car to car and painter. It didn't get as far as the firewall unless the painter had a fit.

It doesnt go onto the top of the cowell too far. It should stop at the bottom of the windshield, however they were not taped off at this point, so there will be overspray. Im sure the guys who did this could do it blindfolded and knew exactly where to hit the seam when spraying this area.

Thanks for the replies, but what color would the blue dash paint be covering? The red/brown primer or black?

The top of the cowell should be a satin black. The entire car body would have been dipped in primer, I assume for 74 it would be red oxide, which to some looks like a brownish colour. The top of the cowell as well as the firewall would have been painted satin black, along with the rest of the engine compartment. The black paint should be sprayed to the bottom of the firewall overlaying the primer. There is no direct line separating the two. Black is oversprayed onto the primer bottom (which should be left in red oxide). Then the metal dash gets painted with the same overlaying technique at the top of the cowell. My 77 is black and it really didn't make much difference at that junction because it was the same colour. On my 79 which is silver, I masked off the dash at the bottom of the windshield line before I painted the cowell top. May not be 'factory correct' but I think it looks a bit neater.

Yes the blue goes to about where the hood seal is, more blue in the center than the outsides. Hard to see in pics. Ever been to Fargo ND? You can come see in person if you like.

It's basically overspray from the dash area for where the glass sits, some have far more than others.

I wish I had taken a couple of pictures of mine before they primed it. Impossible to tell now.

We all know, they weren't building show cars. Other than the buyer looking under the hood, the only other person to see underneath was the guy doing oil changes. Factory/corporate could care less what it looked like.
