Power and Manual Steering Boxes
Hi guys, could someone clarify for me the different steering boxes for 1965.
I recall that there is 3 ratios for the 3 different steering boxes for 1965, is this correct? 1) The power steering unit being the quickest 2) The Quick ratio manual. 3) The standard manual box. Would anyone know off hand what the part numbers are for these units? thanks in advance.

If anyone has a 1965 manual steering box and it's easy to see the part/assembly number I'd appreciate it, thanks.

cant remember coming across a factory "quick" ratio Saginaw manual box, would that an earlier Corvette deal?
manual boxes have a casting number on the side & a date code on a pad up by the bolt on cover. The '64-67 (or 67.5) A body pitman arm has its own casting number, then the size of the tapered hole in the pitman arm changed, later version of this A-body man steg pitman arm was used up through '72 models

Gary,
I have no numbers to offer, but there were “3” different ratios that were offered in 65. Code 612 = standard quick box, 20:1 for $10.76. Chris.

Chris, I appreciate you reaching out with the information. I imagine the cars with the added quick ratio manual were a little bit harder to turn at low speeds.

You would be correct. Our 64 has the quick ratio box and coupled with the sport steering wheel which is a smaller diameter makes it a bear in tight parking lot moves. My 65 Chevelle with the standard ratio box and larger wheel is infinitely easier to steer even with wide sporty radial tires.

I have the quick steering option as well as the optional dealer installed steering damper on my ‘65 and I can tell you that it’s like driving a bread truck in slow speeds . Going straight down a road is never a problem. I’ll take power steering any day but I’m keeping it stock. I’ll take the pain!

I took a manual steering box off of a 65 Tempest 6cyl. I just went out and it took 6 turns of the rag joint to go from one side to the other but I don't know how that equates to ratio.
