Default Tachometer option

Was a tachometer an option for a 70 GTO vert? I'm looking at one in the PY classifieds and I noticed that it doesn't have a tach. The car is an auto so did it depend on the transmission you ordered?

Thanks

Peter

Option code U30 RALLY GUAGE CLUSTER-TACHOMETER 484 $84.26 IN 1970. That is the way my window sticker reads.

I wouldnt buy the in dash tach as you or at least I could not read it while driving without taking your eyes off the road to find it. Besides that the hood tach looks good on a GTO and easy to read

I'll add to the fact that the repro in dash tachs SUCK. After you've finished trying to get some of the slopped silicone off the edges so it doesn't show through the poor fit to the pod, youi'll notice you can't see it at night because the lights do not illuminate it correctly. You'll go blind squinting at it while you're about to plow into the stopped car in front of you. Okay from a distance during the day if you don't dwell on the edges. Besides, who looks at a tach when they're driving? you do it by feel and sound. Hood tachs are MUST, but that's because they're cool eye candy, not because you need them!

GTo4ever is correct. I forgot how much fun it was straining to see the tach at night.
Stick a clock in that hole thats what should be in it or leave it blank

Don't have to buy a repro!

Also disagree on hood tach being the way to go, real PITA to correctly install & often just leads to more problems. Besides, a factory dash tach is a rel easy install...whether you have rally guages, currently, or not. Having owned three Judges & my T-37 post, all factory equipped with hood tachs, glad my keepers, today, with the exception of one factory hood tach car, all have factory indash tachs.

Last, if you're running points type distributor, might watch for a nice '69-72 (points style) original in dash tach over the repro's. If running an HEI distrib (or M & H or Pertronix conversion in a points type distrib), you'll want to send the tach out to Randy Watson (R & C tach shop), so it will read right. Good luck.

I installed a Pertronix Ignitor that replaced the points. The car ran beautifully but the hood tach would not work after trying several solutions, I gave up and replaced the points. One thing became obvious, the runs more smoothly with the Pertronix than the points. I just may to have another go with the Pertronix and find a solution to get the hood tach running

You are a lucky man! Some tachs work, some don’t. The tach is happy now with the points but I’m not! An Ames tach did not work either!

My repo hood tach works just fine with my Pertronix ignitor. I plugged the tach right into my M&H harness. Lights up great. It's the HUD of the 60s/70s. It's a real trust fall cutting a big hole in the hood but the results are worth it.

There's few cars in the muscle car era that had a standard tach. Maybe the 1970 Challenger R/T?

I like the dash tachs better once you use it it’s not hard to see and actually I have always thought just the opposite. The thing I found using a hood tach was if your on a road with street lights every time you pass under one you get a reflection of light off the glass of the tach. I have a hood tach on my Firebird now and use a aftermarket tach on the steering wheel.

To get back to your question. I believe the tachometer was optional no matter what transmission was ordered.

My 70 Hardtop that is pretty much a base model GTO does not have a tach- just a blank pod. We ended up putting a hood tach on it.

Get a set of Accel #8104 points from the 70s on e-Bay and use the single points distributor to trigger a CD box like the Vertex Z6, MSD6AL CD Box, one of the best ignitions going...

I never had any issues with those old Dixco hood tacks I had.. You can't go around slamming the hood like a Gorilla on PCP though...
