Default Formula wheel hub fit question

Installing a formula wheel kit from Ames on 70 GTO. Does this gap look right? Can’t get it to tighten down any further. Suggestions?

I have the same problem, either live with it or get an OE one, as suggested.

Did a GM one solve the problem for you?

I chose the 'live with it' route. I wanted a newly sprayed unit, and didn't want to have to paint an old one.

Called Ames tech support. Guy claims they've never had a complaint or problem. He said to take it off, make sure there's nothing on threads, use some light oil, and then reinstall. Went to auto parts store and borrowed wheel puller. Cleaned and checked everything, and of course....same result. While it was off I painted the inner collar thing that's visible and that hepled it not look so bad. Think I'll just live with it. Then I went to put wheel on and the allen head screws are obviously too big. Called Ames back and they said they're a tight fit but they'll fit. Well, as I said they're obviously TOO BIG. Tried to force them and they just went in a quarter turn, and are now stripped out. Waiting for a call back. Not sure what the deal is here. I've ordered many thousands of dollars of parts from Ames starting in the early eightees and never a single problem?

At one point I heard the screws were metric, then changed over to SAE. One other person complained about having the wrong screws, most likely got a set of metric screws for an SAE hub or visa-versa.

There's several threads on it, could probably search it, but as before when I tried, it's not hitting on the key words I used, had trouble finding other threads.

I read it yesterday, but couldn’t find it again today. Told Ames about the post, but they didn’t listen.

This. I bought the hub and mounting bolts when I converted my ‘70 to power steering earlier this summer. The hub was tapped for SAE bolts, but they included Metric bolts in the package. I just retapped it to use the metric. I also have a similar cap. This repop stuff is crap sometimes.

Got an original and still a gap. Does anyone with an original wheel have this same problem. Maybe this is just how they all are?

Here's mine, '71, OE non-tilt column, OE hub. So looks like it's 1/8" gap.

My tilt column, not OE to car, and aftermarket hub, are a larger gap for sure, and originally complained about it, which in my research was what drove my comments above. I posted on that in the 71-72 A body section.

BN - Is that a tilt column? Tilt is going to naturally have more of a gap.

Ames should have known AND heard of the problem, not sure what's going on there. They are aware of the issue regarding the screw sizes.

They are also aware of the gap problem, I know at least 3 people that have called about it, I being one of them. So I know they've at least heard about it.

There's no way to doctor it to fit tighter, period. It's a machined spline, and suspect they got the taper wrong when made, which makes sense with the whole metric/SAE issue.

Somewhere in these forums I read that originals had two different GM part numbers, but I can’t seem to find that post again. The original I have is stamped 6000 500. Maybe the other one is a different size?
