More than likely it went thru a rebuilder at some point in the past & had a different rear section put on it.

The internal regulators started in 1970 for the Firebirds and 1971 for the rest of the models, basically. (some certain apps like 69 400 Birds, could be had before that)

Yours is a 1972 model.

Actually I have bought a couple of the mid 72 "928's" with external regulation as well.
These are NOT a oddball, and many you can find are NOT rebuilt.
These were used on AMC Gremlins with external regulators.. GASP...
Yup, I have removed an original myself. In Fact you can find the 928's up into 1976, and seller will tell you they are from 1966.
You can buy these for 20-30 bucks and rebuild into a 10si, IF you really need that date. I have built a few of them.

Very odd, but nothing surprises me with AMC's sourcing of component parts.
Over the last 30 years, I've easily pulled two dozen '71-74 model 928 alts off original Pontiac 350-455 engines & several dozen more '71 & 72 model usage 928's from used parts stocks & in boneyards, can't remember running across one without a 10SI (internally regulated) rear case.

Believe the earliest Delco oem internally regulated alternator was the "800". Has a specific finned rear case, but not the same as used on the '69 or '70 intenal reg alts. The "800" was the factory alternator on a '68 GrandPrix with AC. Have one out in the alternator boxes.

AMC didn't use the 928 until 1975 and it was an internally regulated alternator. All 928 were internal. Someone changed the rear case.

There are listings for the 928 in Hollanders in cars with external regulator.
I have seen and own a 76 "928" , and Pontiac wasn't using it.
I guess its possible that the "928" may have had a 7-8 year run when new, regardless of clock position, and vehicle it was installed in.
