I'm confused, did he didn't not do it or was it the other way?

His son was turning the crank clockwise (viewed from front) and he was spinning the pump counter-clockwise.
In other words, neither one was doing anything wrong. I hope you didn't yell at the kid 64speed!

He did not omit the word "nephew" and go on the say he never turned the engine clockwise. He mistakenly used the word "never" instead of "nephew" and what he was saying is that his nephew was turning it clockwise.
64Speed, trust me on this, eliminate a potential issue now, and re-check the torque on the balancer bolt. Turning it slightly backwards to position rockers for a valve adjustment is one thing, turning it backwards several revolutions is another. Re-torque that sucker. |

But....I don't think he ever turned it backwards....?

It doesn't sound like he did. But for the sake of discussion, let's suppose he did. The spec on on that bolt is what, 160 lb-ft? What's the most it could take to turn over a crank, either direction, 35-40 lb-ft? I don't think it's possible to loosen it that way. I'm a fan of "better safe than sorry" and there's certainly no harm in checking. I have to ask though, Is there any way a properly torqued crank bolt could be loosened in this fashion?

2. Clockwise/counterclockwise as seen from WHERE? Front of the car, looking rearward at the damper? Clockwise is correct. As seen from the driver's seat, or from leaning over the distributor, looking forward at your nephew? Counter-clockwise is correct. Last edited by Schurkey; 07-17-2020 at 04:49 PM. |
