Default 67 Tempest trim

Been thinking of deleting the rocker trim and maybe the rear trunk trim. Any pro's or con's from deleting any of these.

The corners of the rear are hard to figure out- the quarters and rear were both replaced. Purchased the car without the trim installed. Not really sure how it goes on or if I can somehow fill it to skip the trim altogether.

I'll attach a pic of what I'm working with.

Thoughts?

I'd agree with this sentiment. Never been a fan of deleting trim. Makes the car look unfinished.

Thanks for the input. Anyone have a pic on how the rear trim pieces are supposed to mount? Some special clip or bracket?

See that hole which is barely visible in the tail panel? There are more holes along the entire perimeter but they were covered up by the new quarter panel sheet metal. You'll need to drill out those holes again. The trim has threaded studs which pass through the holes in the tail panel and nuts are used to secure on the back side.

As much as I like Foose's work, I can't stand it when he "de-chromes" a car. Danny Koker (Count's Kustoms) does a similar thing.

Perfect fugly example

My trim piece does not have threaded studs. It looks like it clips onto something. I was off the car when I got it. Been trying to find reference pics.

Yes, there are butterfly clips with threaded studs that clip into the back of the moulding.

Correct. They look like this (or similar), I believe:

I think Ames sells them.

Thanks for the pics. That helps a little. Does anyone have a pic of the trim with the clips affixed? Maybe a pic of what holes need to be where in the rear deck? I know there's a couple , but the trim piece also has a spot for a bolt on the bottom of the trim and neither side of my metal has any other holes. I'd prefer to avoid making holes I don't need.

Chief of the 60's: I agree that blue one doesn't look right. Honestly does not look like some thing Foose would create. The aesthetic feels "off" in that pic.

My current goal was to take the car out of the black epoxy primer, do some mild bodywork to get it good enough, and then shoot it with a basic satin/matte/flat color and call it good. I don't want super nice, and shiny. If it's too pretty, it becomes garage art and we won't enjoy it. Honestly probably should have left the crappy patina but that ship has sailed...

My idea of no trim (not my car- found it on pro-touring site):

Best I can do for you.

In this picture you will see two U shaped openings in the quarter panel, rest of round holes are spot weld drill holes.
Those U shaped openings are where the tail panel would have round holes in it to locate the T bolts above.
I see the inboard hole in your picture above, but not the one right in the curve. You should be able to feel where it's located from inside.

The bottom of the chrome trim is turned under and has a small hole for a sheet metal screw to hold it up.

Given that the tail panel is pre-drilled for the trim studs, are you unable to see those holes when looking at the back side of the tail panel from within the trunk?

I need to check- it was a GTO replacement that was cut to fit Tempest lights.

Use the trim. Without it the rear will look unfinished and fugly IMO. At times Foose isn't the brightest bulb in the box. Yeah he does very nice work, but no trim doesn't make it a nice looking car. And painted bumpers look like sh*t.

As for the tail panel, use the Tempest panel or use the GTO panel.... But don't hack up a GTO panel to use Tempest lights in it. That's just looking for problems.

But as they say... it's your car, do as you want.

Edit: The color of that pro touring car in your #11 post looks great.

Here's a link to the page where I found it. There's lots of great cars and ideas out there... This one is painted Martinique bronze with satin clear, Post #203.

Both holes are in the picture. The tailpanel is shifted to the left, as seen below the trunk lid/quarter panel gap.

Sorry, no pics with Clips inserted into the molding.

The "Butterfly" clip slips into the slot on the molding and can be slid side to side.
So the hole location isn't 100% critical.

Got it. Here's the other issue. The Tempest trunk lid was too chewed up to use so I put on a GTO trunk lid. The original Tempest trim won't line up. If I get it squared on one side the other side pops up. The trim is not flexible enough to cover that bend.

That's why I was thinking it might be easier to fill in all the holes, smooth it down and call it good.
