I need to do this on the center buttons on my gauge cluster. The one in middle of idiot lights is peeled badly. The one on my speedo needle is not quite as bad.

Anyone ever done this for those little buttons?

What about center AC vent in dash? I may give it a try, have nothing to lose.

Tempest, you did excellent work! That looks amazingly reflective. What specific black paint did you use? I had trouble with the black when I did my bezel.

I just used a high gloss black paint made for plastic...nothing special.

I will see if I can find the can.

I did my center AC vent. Came out very good.

I am not demonstrating a knack for this, but I gave it a try.

Original button from my gauge cluster:

Stripped the aluminum by soaking in drano:

Sprayed with Testor's gloss back for model cars, dried overnight, then with aerosol SpazStix. Turned out OK, but not as good as I know is possible, and not as good as the trim on my dash bezel. The gloss black looked great, but the SpazStix mottled... I suspect it is my repeated lesson with high dewpoints here, but maybe just me..

It will probably look OK in the dash, but no-where near the stamped aluminum center I polished on the speedo:

Makes me wonder if I could glue some aluminum foil on stuff like this, then polish it and end up better off?

It can definitely be tempermental. I did my temp and oil pressure gauge bezels and they came out like silver spray paint. Other times, it comes out very close to chrome.
I think you may be on to something with the dewpoint, humidity, etc. One thing I know though, if you don't like the results, more is not the answer. You have to start over with the black. Less is definitely more on the chrome paint. Almost like the black has to show through the almost translucent chrome.

Here is a photo after masking with Fine Line tape around the edges of the proposed 're-chroming' area. I only did that because I wanted to preserve the '68 panel's unique 'dark aqua' like color where it will peek through the edges of the woodgrain. I know from experience that it won't look right 'chrome' there and black isn't right for this particular year. Even if I had not done that, I would still have to do at least black at those edges. The inside of the instrument openings is completely masked. Again, I did not want that black. '68 is the only year that used that weird blue-aqua-grey like color.
Also, notice the paint is Krylon 'Rust Tough'. I like the fan spray nozzle it has and it has, in my opinion, a superior gloss compared to most brands. GLOSSY black is critical to getting the chrome effect.

Test to try to recover PB photo attachements

I have a great interest in this thread ... but the pictures are going downhill fast

I'm going to give a few of these methods a try on some random pieces of plastic and see what kind of a results I can before trying it on a real piece.

I was trying to recover the pics for this thread but I think I may have moved them off PB. Now I have to find them...who knows where they are now.
If I do, I'll post a couple of them back to the thread.

Just occurred to me where I might find the pics.. The dates of the posts in this thread should help as I don't think I've ever deleted any of the photos off the camera card.

Although not chrome, I was happy with the way mine turned out using SpazStix. The only thing I wish I had done was repaint the blueish color around the gauge rings

Yeah, looks good Joe. As you say, not a 100% chrome clone but better than any alternative type coating I've seen, including the metal tape type substitutes.
I found some of the photos on my memory card. Their mixed in with a coupla hundred others but I'll dig them out later. Still haven't found the 'before' and 'during' photos. Here's a couple of the finished dash for the time being.. It still looks like this by the way.... 3 years later I think?

Yeah, I think the photo before the wood veneer was added really shows just how good this stuff can be. Closer to chrome than anything else you're gonna get for about ten bucks!

I just "discovered" Pchrome's website. Apparently it's almost identical to Cosmi-Chrome, which I've used successfully. But Cosmi-Chrome requires a large investment in equipment, and the local shop I used no longer offers the service. Pchrome, however, offers a "starter kit" (up to 25 sq.ft.) for $600. Anybody have experience with this starter-kit?
