Be sure to use a good stab shaft on the clutch.

Did you use a clutch pilot tool to center the clutch disk as you tightened up the pressure plate?

If you have a buddy, have them step on the clutch pedal while you insert the trans...that will float the disk if that's the issue.

Whatever you do, don't tighten up the trans bolts to pull it in. You could break off the ears. It should slide in completely before tightening.

Make a couple of cut-off bolts that screw into the rear face of the bellhousing and are about 3.5" long. 1/2" of Thread going into the bellhousing and 3" of smooth bolt for the Trans mounting flange to rest on.

Then push the the input spline thru the throwout bearing and the clutch disc (by rotating the output shaft on the trans with it locked in a gear).

Now here is where the steel guide pins help.

Push the trans forward and move the rear of the trans up and down slightly and you should engage the pilot bearing. They can be a bear to insert the input shaft into as not much radius on them. Pilot Bushings you can add a smoother radius for the input shaft to slide into when you cut down the Pilot Bushing diameter to fit into the Pontiac Crank.

Without the Guide Pins you need a couple of people to make the installation easy.
One person can easily do the install with a floor jack and the guide pins.

Tom V.

I never have the luxury of having a second person in the drivers seat to release the clutch disc.

I like to make some 4" long studs (cut off heads of bolts) then saw slot so can use screw driver to install /remove them. This way tranny is lined up to slide in. Good Luck

For alignment bolts I used old head bolts. I cut off the heads and then slotted them for a screw driver. I used two different lengths so that I only had to line it up with one first. Just make sure the shorter one is long enough to protrude a little outside the trans flange. I use old broken input shafts to line up the clutch. I have a couple of them, and the work perfectly.

Good idea using cut off bolts....and most times a second person is hard to find.

When you get it within a inch or so from being all the way in, have someone push the clutch pedal in while you push in on the transmission. That will usually do the trick.

I do not have any of the linkage hooked up. I tried with a ratchet strap.

I am going to pull the bellhousing off. there are a couple marks in it from the bolts that hold the front shaft in.

Did you twist the trans some to align / clock input shaft splines ?
I've put them in 2 gears at once to lock it internally so input shaft wouldn't spin when doing this

The coarse spline shaft doesn't always just pop in

Ok I pulled the bellhousing off reset the clutch again with the alignment tool. I took the old clutch and it goes on no problem. I also made alignment bolts.

Hook you're clutch linkage up and push the pedal in. It's got to be hooked up anyway

Take the bellhousing completely off the engine.
Put the trans on a floor jack and line it up with the clutch/ pressure plate/ pilot bearing.
Try to install the assembly and see if it goes thru the disc and lines up/goes into the pilot bearing. If so then I would check the register on the bellhousing vs the center of the crankshaft to see if the bellhousing is not aligned.

I’ve had my m20 out several times over the years and have never been able to get it back in w/o pushing in the clutch.
