Possibly the use of a clay bar to remove dead paint and then high quality wax.

You will risk ruining that 55 year old Survivor paint with wet sanding and buffing, plus ruining the pinstripe.
The topside of Original lacquer paint typically has some checking, but that’s a trademark of a Survivor.

It’s your car but I would preserve what’s there now and enjoy.

PS, what is the Powertrain in this car ???

Four-speed, 4 barrel car. Second owner was talked into adding the duel master cylinder. I have the original single master cylinder and will have it rebuilt

That would be cool but all of those pictures are from the original owner both of which are still alive. He has been a wealth of information in documenting history of the car.

That is a Beautiful survivor. Attached is my not quite Nightwatch anymore (but will be again) 66. my Dad was the original owner and has been mine since '87. i wish there was more photo docs., just a few B&W polaroids.

Funny, that was a long time ago! Since then I have built two other cars and preserved an original 60s vintage hot rod. Crazy how time flies!! Looking forward to the preservation of this GTO!

dad was def not a man for originality. he added the 67 rocker trim in the 70's, which i don't mind so much. the hood louvers are 67 mustang fastback quarter louvers (i know right). i plan to either fill the holes or replace the hood before the next repaint (want a stock hood but may go repro). the paint is acrylic enamel from 1987 and is showing it's age despite always being garage kept. until 18 months ago i rarely drove the car except around my neighborhood for the last 15 yrs. since you point out the obvious "changes" from factory....when dad gave me the car in 86 it had a 455 olds engine, thrush sidewinder exhaust, 70's GM swivel bucket seats, and 68 cougar taillights. all that was removed when i got it and returned to stock but still have a few things to go. i'm retired now and my sons are grown so i have the time now.

Quite a collection of random auto parts..
Every each of them makes the car unique and has a story to tell..

Would love to se a pic of cougar taillights, given the fact that 66 taillights are one of my favorite of all time!
