Red drums came with Rally wheels in '66 so they've been replaced or just painted by a P.O.

If the owner of this ‘66 GTO wants to educate himself on his car I would suggest visiting johnta1 website (post 99) as it is extremely informative on Pontiacs.
I’ve consulted it many times over the years. Since this motor was pulled for service and painting count the freeze plugs on the lower side of block. 389 has two plugs on each side. 400 has three plugs on each side. |

The engine unit number / sequence number 698534 does seem to be in range for a later build in late June.
But its a baby step in authentication process. The date codes on things like the block, heads, intake, exhaust exhaust manifolds, and brake drums all look like this : Fake looking slot head screw - then a Letter - then 2 or 3 numbers - then another fake looking slot head screw . @F 18 6@ Just an example: F is 6th month = June 18 is the day 6 is the year 1966 You need to locate all of those casting dates and photo document them now while you have the chance. Dates are cast in raised digits you can feel with your fingers - like brail. On the block - it is close to the hole that the distributor goes down into. On heads - it is underneath the area that the valve cover would normally hide from view. In between the area where you see springs and rocker arms - it is plainly visible On intake I think it is almost hidden behind/underneath a carburetor Been a while now since I had a 66 intake in front of me. Exh manifolds and brake drums - you will see them plainly. Your distributor should be cast iron , and have a stainless steel band wrapped around its lower neck. Verify the numbers and letters on the band. You want to photo document all these things. This is how you document a car - the papers are only as good as the parts ON the Car. Paper is paper We can help with this Realize the car isn't sitting at your house , but try to get more data and proofing pics each time you go. Its easier to do now while you have easier access if the engine is out or the wheels are off. |

The
@F 20 6@ Is the casting date code June 20 1966 Your car body was built June 5th Week , 1966 So that works out nicely. The engine parts , and everything else , should pre-date the Build Week of the car body. Get all the date codes you can from your engine components that I mentioned before , when you can. That is the stuff that potential future buyers will highly appreciate. It can even help with judging at certain events in certain conditions. |

You’ll get more love with that car....buy leaving it alone. Just buff what’s there....polish the chrome and stainless and interior.
Even some body scars add to the story. Anyone can have a nice paint job. Heck...I have cigarette burns on my dash ..( when I bought the car )right above the ash tray on my 67 GTO...I have no plans of fixing that... |

Greg is there any chance you could photo the dates on your heads distributor and exhaust manifolds.
Even if not correct dates it might help Tedd find his dates. Pretty cool they both came through same dealer and the same color. |

I didn’t realize there are head numbers as well, I can easily retrieve those as well as the exhaust manifolds
And the spare tire on Monday. And Barron I spoke to Ron B The Original owner .. you were right! He bought the car because he saw it advertised so cheaply at the dealer and he purchased it off the showroom floor. He realized it was a stripped down model but he was young and didn’t care he could afford it. He also found a ton of old literature he gave me I will post it later .. Thank you . |

Super cool stuff about the original owner.
He probably knows if the wheels were black or blue too. Yes please do get the date codes on those parts. I listed in a recent (long) post on what/where to look for. Document as much as you can concerning originality. |

That shift knob was an extra cost option , not listed on your billing data.
But that doesn't mean that it wasn't there when he bought it from the dealer. They could have popped it on there for a little bling , or by his request. Its a fancy piece and desirable. |

By the way, my engine is not the born with engine, it just happens to be the correct engine for my car. The guy I got the car from called me up one day and said he had an engine that he thought I'd be interested in. It was complete from carb to pan and ran like a top right in the junk car that it was sitting in. Even the choke worked.
