Heck, that photo alone would be pretty good inspiration for me.

I'm slow but getting there. The flare nut on the brake hardline had to be loosened with vise grips so l have to cut, re-flare the line and replace the nut..then it all gets installed.
I'm not really the paint and chalk guy but since these paint daubs showed up on the springs and differential when l washed them, l reproduced them.
I have no idea what they mean.

So l am told...but l also understand that these aren't considered the strongest of axles. I'm not a racer and don't own a pair of slicks so I think I'll be ok.

Ken, are you going to install the functional ram air pan to complete the transformation?

Looking good, Greg. I’ve got a 8.2 3.55 nodular rear in my car and it’s held up just fine for 30 years. I had monzaz rebuild it a couple years ago, it was pretty beat when I sent it his way. He did caution me to go easy on it.

I don’t think so, I don’t want to cut my hood. I do have open scoops already though. My car has a/c so it wouldn’t be accurate in terms of appearance anyway. I kind of like the idea of keeping it low key as an Easter egg for those who know what they’re looking at.

I got my garage wired and workbench set up with good lighting and electrical. I disassembled the heads the other day. Not flags other than one of the exhaust guides having a different seal than the rest.

I’ve been shopping for a cam and valve train for this set up. I think I’m going roller. Butler recommended their 744 grind from their ram air roller series, but it’s pretty conservative in terms of LSA and lift. Kauffmann’s HR224 looks a little more appealing.

There's a couple things I want to do this winter. Starting with taking the car to our local version of the DMV and getting it approved and licensed. The car is ready, the date is planned.. now it's just wait and see.

If it makes it through I want to remove the offy dual quad and holley 450's and put in a Pontiac single 4 barrel intake. I also need to make up my mind on whether I'm going with a Holley 770 street avenger or a Quadrajet. Both will need a rebuild..
After that is done it is time to remove the electric fuel pump and go to a RobbMC mechanical one. We'll see how far I get.

Cars will have to wait until spring again. 85 in Yuma beats shoveling snow in Montana!

Over the Thanksgiving break I built a storage shed to get all non-car stuff out of the garage and give myself plenty of work space

I put in a call to Kauffmann a couple weeks ago for a bunch of top end parts. I'm going to go with Jeff's HR224 grind, which he apparently runs in his own cruiser. I took the car out a couple times over the last few weeks and it's running so well I kind of don't want to take it apart!

I finally got the rear axle swapped and now struggling with trying to get brake fluid back to the cylinders. I was hoping that it would just gravity feed but no luck so far.

Yep...nothing. l'm guessing that the little piston in the combination valve might need to be recentered. Alas, this too shall pass...

It's been cold, wet and rainy around here the last few weeks which made me realize it's probably a good time to get wrenching. I hesitated because I'm still waiting on the cam from Kauffmann and there's no ETA.

I have a new valley pan, oil pan gasket and one piece rear main on the way from BOP. I've also been stockpiling all the other gaskets and misc I'll need. I guess I'll play it by ear, but I figure worse case I'll keep my current cam if the wait time for the roller set up gets too ridiculous. The plan was to pull the engine over the holiday break but I've been dragging my feet.

The heads have been sitting apart on my bench for quite a while now. I may have Kauffmann send the springs, valves, etc now so I can get the heads off to the machine shop. I'm sure it will take them a bit to turn them around.

I've got plenty to do freshening things up under the hood in the mean time. The gunk the A/C compressor slung over the Summer got everywhere.

Anyone ever fab a sheet metal guard to go around the AC pulley? Couldn't go around the whole thing obviously, but could reduce what gets thrown on the hood, right fender etc.

I finally got the rear end installed in mine and all of the brake issues straightened out but I have only driven it about 20 ft! It's hot as heck here today and storms expected as you might guess considering that we're in January so it won't get driven today.
It did leave two black marks in my driveway when I chirp the tires though so I guess the limited slip is working. I plan to leave some much longer ones in the next couple of days...lol

Never thought about it. What gets slung by the AC compressor? If you're not leaking anything, should be good right?

The A/C compressor assembly on my car is about 15-20 years old and I didn't use it for most of that time. I suspect a seal dried up or deterioriated from sitting idle which is why it's slinging so much goo. Whatever it is, the stuff doesn't wipe off. It's got some grease in it, but it's pretty baked on to the hood and fender wells. Oddly, the system doesn't seem to be leaking freon. The right fix is to evacuate the system and replace the seal on the clutch, but in the mean time I picked up a guard off eBay to minimize the goo. It only slings when the clutch is engaged so if I don't run the A/C it stays clean.

Got the engine out in short order today with the help of my son. He's been lamenting about not taking auto shop at school and I keep telling him we have a shop of our own in the garage so it was nice to have him take an interest in the old Goat. Other than a little grime, things look ok from the outside. Next step is to start tearing it down to the short block to see what kind of shape things are inside.

I noticed that the #16 heads I'm taking off have the same casting date as one of the heads I'm putting on - D228. Kind of funny. Another oddity -one of the RAII heads is D228 night time and the other is D229 day time so one has a 96 and other other does not. From what I've read the 29th was the day the added the 96.

Got a box of stuff from BOP today - new one piece oil pan gasket, valley pan to clear the roller lifters, and a one piece rear main. I'm a little intimidated to change out the rear main. I'm not even sure it's leaking, it could just be the pan gasket.

Oh yeah, here's another relic from the past - a Continental 13" special converter from about 2002. These, along with the 10" Jim Hand Special, were the hot ticket back then. I believe Kris passed on a few years ago and Continental is no more.

I've been running this with all my various setups over the years (744, Crower 60916, Voodoo 702). It's been a good converter, but I think I've outgrown it as I find myself downshifting a lot around town to put it in the power band. Might be a better option out there with the roller that's going in, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.
