Default Sitting for thirty years, got it running, 73 TA

Original post http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=653349

Well after changing the water pump and the fuel pump, I replaced the fuel filter, then turned it over until fuel pumped out the line. Hooked up the fuel line and turned the key, after I cranking it for about 5 seconds it started right up (I never even pumped the gas pedal), it had good oil pressure so I ran for about a minute and shut it down to change the oil. The oil that came out was pretty bad. After I changed the oil, I started it again, and let it warm up to operating temp. It does not appears to burn any oil and nothing leaks. It actually runs pretty good, it idles a little rough, probably has some vacumn leaks. Next I need to change the plugs, wires, points, set the timing, drain the fuel tank, and perform a compression check. The timing chain looks to have been replaced by the original owner.

Hard to believe that this car has been off the road for thirty years, and it appears to be to be in mechanically sound condition. I was a little worried about it having a cracked block because of the rusted waterpump, and the condition of the oil.

You could say that I am pretty damn happy about this has turned out so far.

Thanks for everyones input.

Mike

The car when I bought it. The previous owner had started to take it apart.

I remember a bunch of the early firebirds and camaros, that swapped fornt clips to the later 78-81 front clips, and I thought back then, it looked better, NOW, I like the looks of the 70-73 "F" bodies, a lot. Sure don't see many of, ANY of them on the road any more!!!

Con grats on a job well done!!! I was looking for the previous thread, and found this!!!
Keep up the good work!!!

East bound and down..............LOL

Reviving an old post. After I got it running in 2011, I decided to start the process to actually drive it. Starting with all new brake calipers, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, brake lines, brake rotors, spark plugs and wires, fuel lines, gas tank, hoses, belts, axle seals, tires, power steering pump, and rebuild the carb,. For some reason, the engine and transmission don't leak. I will update as I progress.

Does your radiator have the tag still attached to the PS tank?

To answer the question about the radiator tag, not sure were or what that is.

Well, I haven't touched the 73 TA since I last posted in 2018. Ended up buying a few more birds. Got this 73 Formula from a guy that bought it from a towing auction. Check out the receipt. It was listed as "Grand Am" on the paperwork got that resolved. I ended up having to pay him double for it ($350). Have already sold the both fenders and doors for $900. Fitted 78 TA fenders and doors to it for a clone. Still need a hood.
