Friday Night Throwdown
So on Friday night, I went to the local 1/8th mile track with my 1980 Trans Am. It looks all factory on the outside, except for the YearOne snowflakes with 275/40/17's on all four corners (Mickey Thompson Drag Radials in the rear). My car is a 462 with FiTech fuel injection, E Heads, Hyd Roller cam, performer rpm with 3.42 gears and a 2600 stall. The track was pretty empty so I made some passes. Cut a 1.64 60 foot time on these low profile drag radials and went 7.50 at 93 mph. Density altitude was 2000 ft so my time should be around a 7.30 at sea level. There was a buddy there driving and tuning his friends trailblazer SS. This thing had a 413 cubic Inch LS3 block and heads, good sized cam, 4000 stall, drag radials, whole nine, etc. We both stopped for gas around midnight after leaving the track, and when we merged on the interstate, he pulled up beside me from around a 30 roll. My car hooks good from a 30 in first gear. So we kicked it on his third honk and I put a good gap on him from the punch and kept on pulling to around 110 and let off. Although his trailblazer is heavy, so was my Trans Am with a passenger and full 20 gallons of gas. Good Kill for the Bird! Love my Poncho!

I read "had both cars at a track but choose to race on the street anyway" stopped reading after that.
Glad that's all you killed...

His car was better from a roll. Apparently you read it all if you read my last statement.
Non congested area.

Why even bother commenting on my post if it bothers you so much? Guarantee you have raced at least one person one time in your life, while not being on the track, or at least got into it in your car at least once on the street, racing or not. And if you haven't, good on you, but don't be a hypocrite.
Also, it's You're**. Apparently I'm not the idiot...

Weak minded? I didn't go for the spell check first, I went for what's true. You know you've at least floored your car on the street. It's the same thing. Quit being a hypocrite and get a life. Also, I'm the farthest thing from weak minded. Guarantee I've been through more than your little head could wrap around. Have a great one.

Let me back the train up a bit.
Welcome to the board, please try not to race on the street. I would hate to see you or anyone get hurt. We all do impulsive things that in hindsight, are not the smartest choices. It doesn't make you an idiot, just a bad choice. Keep it at the track and enjoy your Pontiac. Now I'm out. Steve

Thank you for easing up a bit. I know the dangers of it and know it's best to be left on the track. I understand your concern and wouldn't want anyone else to get hurt either. Have a good one man, and you enjoy your car as well.
I will do my best to always keep it on the track.

Like most of us with muscle cars or even newer 'fast' cars we sometimes can't help ourselves. I still flog it on the 'street' occasionally although I prefer the track where I can run it all the way out. As I have gotten older my self control has improved but I know from back in the day when I was in my late teens and early 20s, I took some real chances in my brother's '65 and '67 GTO. It is only by God's grace that I didn't have a serious wreck. Anyway, I enjoyed your story and I sense you have 'learned' a bit from the experience. Nice ride by the way.

I prefer the track as well honestly. The Thing feels like a different animal actually hooking up. I learned my lesson when I was younger in my first Trans Am with a built 455. 16 years old and showing off with a buddy basically totaled the car. I'm 23 now and have an even faster car, but Ever since then I have been extra careful, even during this "incident", as the road was empty. It is hard to resist the urge. Thanks for the comment and for liking the story!
