How do you ID a Pontiac 215 V8?
I was just contacted by a friend of a friend trying to ID the 215 V8 he just bought from an estate sale. He says the Engine has what looks to be an extra Head Bolt hole like an Olds Block, but Buick Heads, and Buick Style Main Bearing Caps.
As I am no an expert on these engines, and he has not provided any pictures. I can't post any. I remember the Pontiac versions of the Block had specific markings, but I don't remember what they are, and I could not find any info in a search of this site. any help welcome. Thanks

Yes I understand that, but I remember that the versions that were optional in 61 & 62 Lemans & Tempests had different markings and or numbers.
I am sorry if I did not make that clear.

the engine block will be stamped "161P' for 61 or "162P" for 62.

You should check the numbers as stated, but your friend may have a bit of a Frankenstein version of the 215. The Oldsmobile version did have the extra head bolt per cylinder, (4) per side toward the intake side of the bore. The Olds heads were unique, more of a true wedge and higher compression. The Buick and Pontiac version were similar with four fewer head bolts. Buick and Pontiac heads would work on the Olds cast block.
