Default fuel pump plating

What is the proper finish for a 4512/6550 3 piece fuel pump after restoration? I spoke to "Then and Now" and "Arthur Gould" and both say they bead blast the whole unit and either can leave it bare or clear coat it. They do not do any plating at all. I have seen pictures from Jim Mott restorations and his pumps are bead blasted lower and middle but the top piece is yellow dichromate. Scott Tiemann pics show the lower and bottom bead blasted also but the top is more like a grey finish. Does the top need to be plated first and then sent out to be restored or does someone do it from beginning to end including any plating that needs to be done?

The '64 and '65 pumps were dichromated yellow like the Tripower carb bodies. The bottom steel cover can be zinc plated. I think that should be bright zinc (silver). I believe the top screws should be black like the carb airhorn screws.

Others please reply if you have better info. .

Jim Mott restored fuel pump. Yellow dichromate top with bead blasted middle and lower? I just checked my 4512 fuel pump and it is all aluminum. Can aluminum be dichromated or zinced?

The bottom and middle almost looks like it is sprayed silver.

This is a NOS/AC fuel pump #6550. This is a replacement part and sometimes these parts differ from those used on the assembly line, especially if they are purchased well after the model year they were used on. However, the box has a print date of 64 so my guess is this is the correct color.

The pump arm is black maybe with some type of phosphate coating. The top of the pump has a flat gray/green or green/gray finish—take your pick; the surface is very smooth. The bowl has a silvery finish and appears to be “as cast” pot metal or aluminum. The bottom cover has the same finish as the top. All the screws appear to be cad plated—yellow??-gold??

A few more pics. These on car pics are from an 8K mile 64 GTO survivor. You can see the pump has the same finish as my NOS pump though the plating on the survior may have degraded somewhat over the years.

64-3Deuces offered a perfect explanation of the 6550.

I appreciate he took the time to share his text and photos.

Here is the NOS 6550 I have.

Chris.

Chris, thanks for your post...Good to see another pump that backs up what I have as NOS.

Your pump is stamped JD and mine is stamped FE. Have any idea of what these mean...assembly plant or assembly line, casting mold, or some internal production tracking???

That's the way I remember mine, but I'm sure it had quite a few miles on it before I really paid much attention to the color.

8LUG, Do you see many date codes on your 4512 fuel pumps? If so, do you have a J, K, L, or M of 64 and would it be for sale? Doesn't even have to be a complete unit, just the dated housing.
