R.I.P. John Glenn
I just saw on the news that astronaut John Glenn has passed away at the age of 95. A true legend and American hero who left his mark upon the world. God Speed.

Just heard the announcemet on the radio. I didn't agree with his politics, but he served his country honorably in two wars and made us believe in ourselves again. Wasn't Glenn the last surviving Mercury astronaut? I didn't realize Scott Carpenter had died (2013).

John Glenn was truly a local hero. He lived and grew up a few miles from my Grandparents and his Aunt was the midwife that delivered my Dad. Small world for sure. I was born the same year he circled the earth and my Grandparents got a tin toy of the Friendship 7 capsule that had a friction motor in it. When I was old enough I ran it on their old linoleum floors until the front wheel went flat I still have it here. I too didn't understand or agree with his politics but he was truly a good man and will be missed by so many.

One of my heroes as well. Sad news, but 95 years was a good long and full life.
That was Buzz Aldrin at the South Pole. |

Glenn was the first American astronaut to orbit the earth. He was also the first to ride the Atlas booster.

No, that is out of "Armageddon". The Atlas booster was notoriously unreliable. It had a funny habit of blowing up just after lift-off. The Mercury project helped the Air Force make the Atlas into a somewhat reliable ICBM.

I doubt anyone walked on the moon. Many believe it's a hoax.

A Convair technical paper i have (60'a70's) on the Atlas booster family has the quote in the lead-intro but doesn't credt which astronaut said it or who heard it.

Most of the astronauts were definitely a special breed; just test pilots in space. No guarantee that any of them would come back alive.

Buzz Aldrin would punch your lights out over that statement...

One of his less harrowing accomplishments
Glenn also survived the infamous 1971 pace car crash at the Indy 500.
