Default 68 wood wheel horn button insert repop size

has anyone replaced the center plastic insert in a 68 wood wheel horn button with one of these repops? I'm working on a friends 68 and that insert looks undersize to me (gee, what a surprise, a repop part isn't right). anyways, his original button insert isn't really that bad and I'm afraid of trashing it to get it out and then have this repop not fit right..

I've come across info that you can get the old one out by dropping it in a pot of boiling water to loosen the glue up but I still don't see any way of getting it out without it probably getting destroyed and I'm trying to talk him into just living with the original rather than jumping the cliff and trashing it to just have this repop be garbage. no matter how I stare at it, it just looks at least 1/8 smaller in diameter but I don't have a good way of measuring the original since it sits flush down in the housing.

Just checked mine. They're the same size.
The glue is so old and dried up in my original it just popped out with a little pressure from a small screwdriver.

Thanks for the info, I'll trust your measurements before my old failing eyes! I wish his would just pop off like that.

Looking at the pictures you provided: Is it just me or is the original larger than the gap between the caliper ends? It appears that the new part is held between the caliper ends and the original rests atop of the caliper as it appears larger.

Picture angle. Heres a second photo. I didn't measure at the caliper tips. Just pressed both against the top.

Photo with the new emblem in place

It’s been a number of years since I replaced mine, but the repro fit perfectly.

Replaced original and replaced repop. Repop failed with cracks just like the original.

2nd repop loooks super.

NOTE: be certain to exactly clock-align the emblem to the lower spoke to perfection.
