Default Art Carr, Redneck converters now Freakshow performance

Just passing this info along for those that didn't see this on Yellowbullet or my for sale ad for one of mine which already sold . I've ran a couple and had good luck with mine. This guy is the one who's been building them for the other companies now doing it for himself.

The thread starts out the same a lot of them do on Yellowbullet with a lot of bs kinda like here sometimes LOL. But does have the contact info if your a budget minded racer like me when looking for a decent converter.

FWIW I've seen many run very well with the old Redneck converters.

Hear much good about Freakshow converters.
Knowledgeable and top customer service.

I have a redneck in my car,it's a little loose but works great. Thanks for the info Bill, i call him him and have them tighten this one up.

IIRC his name is Ed Bigley (sp),AKA footbraker,AKA NED racer,and AKA about a dozen other screen names.

Guy has been summarily thrown off of nearly every performance related auto forum out there multiple times,so then he masks his IP address and sneaks back in under other some new screen name,just to spew even more vitriol,the man simply does'nt "get it".

There is no reasoning with him,either you see things his way,or what he views as the wrong way,and there is no common ground to be found in between those often polar extremes,I guess the word megalomania comes to mind to best describe him.

I personally know plenty of people who have used Redneck converters,and they're all happy with them for their applications,and yes this is in pontiacs for the most part,which we all know are a tough test for any torque converter,so I for one am glad to see he's gotten back into the swing of things.

One of my friends up here in Wi. went thru 2 TCI "breakaway" converters in his pontiac over a very short period of time before getting the 3000-3200 stall Redneck in there,and that Redneck converter has been doing fine now for like 5+ years.

Even going to be using a 3800-4200 stall Redneck in my '70 LeMans/GTO racecar.

That converter (mine) came outta a friends 'bird in Texas,and I know for a fact that converter ran strong with it in his car,so I trust that the Redneck converter has got the goods to do what I'll be doing.

Just dont care for the new "Freakshow" name all that much myself,but WTH with the old name being Redneck,what should I expect,right?
I dunno clearly they build better converters than they pick names for the company,LOL.

Thanks for posting that link,I have'nt been keeping track of absolutely everything going on over @ YB,probably saw the "Freakshow" name mentioned over there,but never would've put 2+2 together w/o an assist.

I tried an art carr converter about 10yrs ago in my 66. Lost et and mph, then sent it out to be tightened and tried it again...still slower than a tci that I was running at the time.

Been quite awhile since that test, they may have improved things by now....or simply the a/c converter didn't like my combo.

My redneck converter is a pos that now sits in a box. I bought a 3k stall it stalled at 5k. Sent back for a restall I told them I wanted a 3k they said no problem! put the converter back in the car 4k No wonder they are no longer with us. lol.

There's the gamut of experiences. I am using one and it is working well in the car in my sig, it has 6.5% slip going across the line. Just another data point.

I've been using these converters for 10 years. Started out Torco, Art Carr bought them out, then Rednec, now Freakshow. My converters have all stalled right where I told them where I wanted them to stall. I did have a failure of one in 2012, sprag. My Freakshow converter works very well. Still tight enough to load the car on the trailer, but stalls right a 5100, right where I want it.

+2 on that deal.

The vast majority of folks I've talked to that bought the Redneck converters were not happy with them. With few exceptions that stalled WAY higher than expected and considerable slippage once fully coupled.

That isn't always a bad deal in this hobby. Every single really loose POS converter I've tested for my Pontiac ended up in some small block powered Camaro and the new owner absolutely LOVED it!

Seriously, this is one area of the hobby where you really do get what you pay for. It's rare to find a full race converter that costs about as much as a fill-up for the tow vehicle, that will get the job done.....IMHO.....Cliff

I doubt that anyone here is trying to say that these are the best converters out there,that would just be ignorant if you ask me.

Regardless just about any converter company can miss the mark a time or two as well.

But just for another data point,the one I bought from my friend in Texas was in a 3700 lb bird with a fairly healthy 406 motor (.030" over 400),it ran a best of 11.88 on motor and 10.98 on a 150 shot,was rated as a 3500 stall and would flash to 3700 in his car,60' in the high 1.60's to low 1.70's on motor and a best 60' of 1.58 on nitrous.

IIRC slippage numbers were said to be in the 8-9% neighborhood.

For a "budget" converter,I'd say that's not too shabby.

Some folks gotta understand that not everyone can afford to pay $700.00+ for a converter when a $400.00 converter can get the job done for their given application.

And I know I cant even afford to pay $400.00 for a converter,that's why I bought that one used from him for like $150.00,LOL.

In my experience,most of the "off the shelf" converters from just about any of the big "name" brands are gonna be more of a crapshoot than these converters are.

I know I've had my share of problems with those in the past.

These converters just try to fill the gap between those generic/mass produced converters and the high $$$$ custom built converters from the high end converter co.s.

I personally dont see anything wrong with that,to each their own.

I had mine built for my combo by Redneck for $275 years ago, 6.5% slip at the big end. I called PTC and they want $850 for an 8" race converter now, I'd pay it if I had to but I didn't have to cause my RN is surviving.

My 92 Grand Am with a Redneck converter would 60 ft 1.21/ 1.22 with a 406 sbc and run 6.20 / 6.23 in the 1/8 with a 5.67 gear. With the same engine and trans in my sons car with a Freakshow it 60 fts 1.36/ 1.37 leaving @ 4000. The 96 bird is heavier than the GA was and my son goes 150 lb more than I. Our car ran between 6.61 and 6.65 every pass all season long regardless the weather. If it runs a 6.61 1st pass it usually runs that number all day long, nedless to say we are very happy with our junk converter. When we had our 406 Pontiac with a th350 it did the same thing just a bit slower. Complete different set up though.

I gave the 406 Pontiac to my son-in-law and it'll be going in his 78 T/A. I'm sure a high dollar converter is better, but we aren't looking for every ounce of power out of our stuff, just enough to go rounds and have some fun. As long as our car will run the number all day long, we don't care if it's 6.60 or 6.40, well we do, we don't want to run faster than 6.40.
