Default 1964 GTO Convertible Asking 34,500

1964 GTO Convertible. PHS documented real GTO.

Built in California and spent it's life there until around 1979. Exported to Ontario around that point in time by the owner. From what I remember, it was his daily driver when he went to university in California. My buddy bought it from him in 1981. He drove it until fall 1985. Decided to restore it at that time. All he managed to do was remove the bumpers to have them rechromed. It sat in his garage until I bought it from him a couple of years ago. Last year, I got it on the road. I put about 1200 miles in it. A few miles this year after winter storage. Priorities have changed for me, so I am downsizing my collection.

This is a real deal GTO. Sold by Nelson Pontiac in El Monte Ca. Born with a 389, 4 bbl automatic. Black with red interior. Documents say this was originally optioned with a white roof. Options include tinted windshield, front seat belts, washers, anit glare mirror, o's remote mirror, console, hd frame, pwr brakes and steering, tilt wheel, courtesy lights, mirror group and am radio. Engine is numbers matching. I have no reason to believe that the transmission and diff are not original to the car.

Added afterwards was the wood wheel and right side fender mirror. Also not original to the car is the 3 deuce intake. It is from a 63 389. As far a I know it is all correct with 1963 carbs. But I am not certain, so make your own assumptions as to how correct it is.

Engine was rebuilt before its long term storage. My mechanic took his time making sure it wouldn't get damaged by trying to start it right up. Oil down the cylinders, crank with a breaker bar, etc. New oil, and then after an hour or so of running, fresh high quality oil with a zinc additive. Pertronix ignition, rebuilt centre carb (the outside ones are not hooked up). Fires right up. No lifter noise or other strange happenings. Also new under the hood is the rad (recore using the original tanks), hoses, belts, and I think the water pump is new. New starter and one wire GM alternator.

Transmission is the original 2 speed automatic. I believe it is original to the car. Shifts properly., etc.

Undercarrriage suspension is all new with the exception of the front springs. They were fine, so left alone. No squeaks, rattles, bumps or funny noises. Also new are the brakes. New power booster, master cylinder, wheel cylinders, springs and hardware, rear shoes (the fronts have around 80% left) and stainless steel lines. New stainless gas lines. Exhaust is what I got with the car. Pypes splitters added and located properly. New Hankook radial tires. I have them mounted on original Rally 1 wheels with original centres and trim rings. But I do have the original steel wheels available as well as the original full coverage wheel covers.

Body is rust free. The trunk has some small holes. I have pictures of the trunk detailing the rust. Paint might be original, but it could be a repaint. I have had opinions from different people saying it is one or the other. If it was repainted, it was done in the 70's or earlier. Driver quality with surface rust on the hood. Rear deck between trunk and back window has some paint lift. Pot metal has the usually pitting. Stainless trim is in good to excellent condition. Bumpers are the originals with show chrome. Floors and frame are excellent. Doors, trunk, hood open and close as they should without slamming.

The left quarter panel is damaged. It happened last summer while at my mechanic's place. Minor damage that is estimated to be around 400 dollars to fix and repaint. But paint match was a concern. I was toying with the idea of repainting the car, so I left it while I made a decision. Now that I am selling the car, I won't fix it, so whomever is interested knows exactly what the damage is.

The roof is in very good condition. Operation is good. No rips or tears, closes tight. Back window is fogged badly. I haven't been able to find anyone local to change it (convertible top people are rare around here) but I do know that it was replaced years ago with a Ames reproduction. I have detail photoed an area where the fabric isn't as good as new. Like I said before, this car codes as having a white roof. I know it had a black roof in California. How old this roof is is anyone's guess. I do have the original top boot (red) but it was stored improperly and doesn't attach now.

Interior is good original condition. No tears, etc. I'm not sure if the carpet is original or a repro. Door panels are good. Sun damage is evident, but everything is in good usable condition. Weatherstripping is cracked and chunked in areas. Probably original. Some wind whistling, but that is to be expected. Glass is in good condition and works properly. Gauges work properly, as far as I can tell. Gas gauge doesn't work.

A correct 64 wood wheel is on the car now. Originally it had the standard wheel. All correct components and it is probably one of the nicest wood wheels out there short of NOS.

I can't think af anything else to say. But call and ask all the questions you like. If you have a representative you would like to have inspect the car, that person is welcome to look it over. Serious persons are welcome to call my mechanic and talk to him about the car.

Asking 34,500. The car is located near Peterborough Ontario. 100 miles northeast of Toronto. I can help with shipping in that I can transport the car in an enclosed car trailer to either a near by shipping location or to the Canadian side of a border point in Ontario. Of course, the car doesn't leave my property until all funds are paid.

Call me pretty well any time. 705 875 8798. Please don't text. I won't respond. I will be loading pictures so please be patient with me. And if you additional pictures, please ask.
